Lucy: Sounds to me like I.B.S., type C. There are 3 kinds, A (alternating),
C (constipation) and D (diarrhea). My wife has suffered from type A all her life. One week she can't go at all, next week she's going 6 times a day. The defining symptom seems to be the gas buildup with cramps. She's had the barium enemas twice, colonoscopies, flex-sigs and of course they show everything to be normal.
I think you need to start at your family physician. He may send you to a "gastro." to ruleout anything serious. They usually try antispasmotic drugs, high fiber products and often, Miralax.
My wife does not like enemas at all, but we've found that a 10-14 oz. bulb of tap water will get her going, or help relieve frequency. I give this maybe 3 A.M.'s per week before she goes to work. 1-2 times/month she asks me to give her a 2 qt. bag of tap water, when the "D" component is driving her nuts and hurting her fissure and "roids".
The saddest part of I.B.S. is that nobody takes this ailment seriously, including a lot of doctors.
Best of luck, Jim
