Is soap safe?

I prever adding some olive oil to the soap for a soapy enema.

As I've mentioned before, I enjoy a strong urge to expel so use a variety of soaps including Ivory (what I got as a child) and Dr. Bronners baby mild and peppermint. Lately I've tried Dead Sea Salt Soap made by "One With Nature" available at Whole Foods and elsewhere. It contains glycerine and sea salt and feels very "slippery." Produces a very thorough clean-out and is not terribly cramping.

A soap enema is when a mild soap is added to an enema for a more thorough colon cleansing. Although many enema guides recommend using only warm water during an enema, small amounts of other ingredients such as oils or salts are often added to the enema bag. A soapy enema is intended to promote complete bowel emptying when simply using warm water has produced incomplete results.

Using this type of enema requires careful selection of the right soap. Only natural soaps should be used, as commercially available dyes and fragrances can irritate the colon and cause pain. Good choices for natural soaps are goat's milk and glycerin-based soaps. Castile soap made with olive oil is the most irritating to the colon and can cause a type of inflammation called chemical colitis.

To prepare a soap enema, you need to add about 3 grams of soap to an enema bag filled with warm water. Both liquid and hard soap can be used. If the soap used is hard, it will need to be rubbed before adding to the water. The enema should then be administered through a tube into the anus.

There are two different types of soap enemas: the cleansing enema and the retention enema. Retention enemas are meant to be held for up to 15 minutes to allow the salt or other ingredients to be absorbed into the walls of the colon. Cleansing enemas should not be kept for very long as most additives have an immediate effect on the intestines.

A soap enema is a cleansing enema and therefore causes cramps when administered. The soap stimulates the walls of the colon and fills the colon to capacity. This triggers peristalsis, the series of muscle contractions that trigger a bowel movement. With a soap enema, five minutes is usually the maximum a patient can keep the enema in before having to release it.

Once the fluid has been introduced into the colon and the patient has evacuated their bowels, a soapy enema should be performed using a water-only enema. This will wash out any soap residue that can irritate the colon if left in. More than one warm water enema may need to be used to wash out all of the soap.
