I. U. D fitting

Guys this is something i was scared to ask my doctor and i am wondering if anybody on here can answer this for me .

Why do us girls have to have the i.u.d fitted when we are on our period ???

Also is it possible to have one i.u.d. taken out and have another fitted at the same appointment .

I have a small problem with mine and am wondering if it is possible to change it for a hormoanal i.u.d. ?

This is usually done towards the end of a period or shortly after. However, it can be fitted at any time provided that you are certain you are not pregnant. You will need to have a vaginal examination. The doctor or nurse will pass a small instrument into your uterus to check its size and position. An IUD is then fitted.

While many doctors routinely do it during your period, it can potentially be done any time of the month as KillerBarbie mentioned provided that you aren't pregnant and you find a doctor willing to do it at another time in your cycle. I believe the reason they like to do it during your period is because your cervix is likely to be a little more open during this time which should make it easier to get the IUD in, but in my personal experience, the one I had inserted roughly mid-cycle didn't seem to be any more difficult for the doctor or any more painful for me than the one I had inserted during my period.

It's definitely possible to have one taken out and have another fitted at the same appointment. I've had that done. You should be able to switch to hormonal if you want.

Its easier to get it in whilst on your period because you're cervix is open and "spongey" (sounds lovely aye) as for the mirena being fitted, if you're in the uk and on the nhs you'll have to beg for a mirena coil as it costs the NHS a lot of money in comparison with the normal IUD. and yes you can have one fitted and one taken out at the same time. its not pleasent but its quick. the mirena i had to pay for as the nhs are stingey!

Please may i correct you about the i.u.d costs now on the nhs here huni, hope you dont mind .

I had my coil fitted when i was 18 and im now 22 and in my last year of the coil, but they only used to let women who have had a baby.

Since i was 18 they changed the law so to speak and found it worked better for younger women who had not had children and was more reliable than the pill and for those like myself who dont like hormones added to their bodys.

Also its free in what we call a family planning clinic, but they are open set evenings of the week in places like an out of hours hospital or a child care center when they are closed.

A local doctor will open up and prescibe things like the pill and coils, to the female injection and do smear tests and gyno exams

But you have answered my question about having a i.u.d.changed the same day.

They get less bonus 😁 if they fit one instead of the cheap :'( one's just out of intrest has a play doc on here ever inserted an i.u.d in their patient 😮

I may be erring on the side of caution in my response, but in my opinion, no RESPONSIBLE play doc should be breaching the confines of the cervix. The risk of injury resulting in the need for surgery or in permanent damage is just too great. We all know about playing on the edge, I play on the edge myself from time to time. Going beyond the cervix and into the uterus isn't edge play, it's over the edge.

I agree with you there, i wouldn't consider doing it myself if asked by a patient but was just wondering what it was like fitting one, just curious really.

I would never dream of trying to fit an IUD to any patient!!!

I had my Merina IUD inserted the first part of Jan and it was awesome! I have had two pregnancies and am in my 30's so the Dr (female) was good to do it.

I had finished my period the week before and was concerned, because as many of you have posted, I also read that the IUD was inserted during the cycle. But due to my two pregnancies and JUST having finished my cycle, it was all good to go. I chose the Mirena due to it having the hormones in it for high hopes of less cramps and the possiblility of not having a period.

My husband went with me the day we dicided to go in and ask the Dr at our local clinic all the questions I had and to set up an appointment for the following week. Well not only did they answer my questions entirely, but we had so helpful and "nice" that we had it inserted THAT day! We did pay out of pocked a few hundred dollars for it, but we felt it was worth it.

I had been on the pill for 6 1/2 years and just wanted something different, plus the monthly expense of the pills kept going up, even after our insurance co-pay. The visit was great. The total appt time took about an hour, most of which was the Dr talking to us about the IUD itself, the insertion process and all possible side effects. I was given 2 IB Profen just in case about 30 minutes prior. Expecting the worst possible pain, aside from child birth, to mine, my husbands, and the Dr's surprise, the worst part about the entire process was the speculums going in. Which that was a little odd due to yearly exams not hurting!

Afterward, the Dr measured my cervix to make sure I was long enough, it was. She took the IUD and insterted, then clipped the strings to the perfect length and pulled the insertion tube out. She inserted her fingers inside me to make sure she could feel the strings and told us to check for the strings every so often, especially after my period, IF i get my period. That was it. She made sure I was ok and wasn't going to faint, which some women apparently do, and then helped me sit up. She left the room and I got dressed. It was a great experience that we both enjoyed and will get more pleasure out of for the next 5 years!

So far I have had some side effects like spotting for 3 weeks a month after insertion and a few major harsh cramps. My last period was a normal 4 days long and had NO cramps at all. Hoping in the next month or so the period will be eliminated completely! 😉

It is interesting to see one fitted and have I look from a guys eye view and have the Dr explain what is going on .

I was allowed to witness my GF fitting with a copper IUD. The insertion, which went well, was painful but quick and bearable. Just afterwards we headed for brunch and went shopping.

However my GF did have some moderate cramps and we went back home to have some rest. She was feeling crampy all day and mild twinges along with discomfort the next day which continued to ease off. As the fitting was on day 7 of her cycle, the period dwindled to light spotting and stopped on the third day.

She had to restrict her daily activities only on the day of insertion feeling very tired and cold especially in the evening. We were told to avoid penetrative sex for 48 hours, which we obeyed but really wanted to uphold our intimacy. Thus we went to bed, both wearing comfy pants and socks and made a lot of necking and frottage which was a new and nice experience.

The next morning she checked for strings and barely found them. Possibly they may have curled around the cervix as they were definitely not hanging straight down. Further, she is very tall 5'10” and has longer vagina. We resumed normal sexual activity on day 3, for the first time in our relations neither with condom nor on the pill. Her sex drive was increased as she stopped OC more than a month before. We were a bit afraid of the penis head getting poked by the strings but I wasn't able to feel anything until we went deep missionary with legs up (which we love most) when I was a little scratched.

Hopefully the strings will soften in time. She had some cramping afterwards likely as a result of uterus and cervix muscles contractions when she reached orgasm. Clearly, her body is still adjusting to having something in there that's probably very normal. Overall the first experience is very positive. She continues her daily routines, hard working, relax in yoga class or fitness and making love naturally. The major issue: we both weren't deeply concerned with this procedure. She wore her elegant clothes as usual, not just asexual sweatpants. It helped her to feel feminine and self-confident. Pain management: one OTC tablet, deep regular breathing and (funny) awareness of me watching her toes curled up when the coil was fitted.

I don't recall if I was on my period or not for the first IUD I had fitted. It was under general at the time I had hyseroscopy.

I know coming out and being replaced hurt like a bitch and the IUD had done its job as stopped having my period.

I believe it’s because that’s the point in our cycles that our cervix is the most dilated, which means easier insertion (I could be wrong). I had a terrible experience with the copper IUD and I was too scared to switch to a hormonal one, but best of luck finding your solution!

I'm not a real Dr. but intrigued by the question. Some quick research and I concur with some of the other comments. Quoting from google sites returned: "You can have most IUDs placed at any time in your menstrual cycle. But it may be more comfortable to have one inserted while you're having your period. This is when your cervix is most open." That said, I would encourage you to ask your medical professional.
