When I was a young teen back in the early 1970s, I had my first gynecological examination at a large hospital here in the city. My mother stayed in the waiting room as a nurse escorted me into a small room that had a door on each side - one leading from the waiting area, and the other which opened into the examination "room," which I was soon to find out was more like an examination cubicle. In the small room I was first led into was just a toilet, a sink, and a vinyl topped metal stool. The nurse then handed me what I thought was a paper gown, and told me to take off all my clothes and put it on. She then left without giving me any further instructions except that I should just wait until I was told to come into the examination room.
After removing all of my clothes, I unfolded the paper "gown," and was confronted with something that looked nothing like the gown I was expecting. The best description I can give of it was that it looked like the front half of a pair of pants. I stood there wondering just HOW it was supposed to be worn. I tried it on both ways - with the "pants legs" hanging down in the front, which left me entirely exposed from the middle of my back on down - and then with the "pants legs" in the back, which left me totally exposed in the front from about an inch or two above my navel on down. I had no idea how it was meant to be put on. I finally opted for the "pants legs" in front since it at least covered my pubic area, although barely. I figured that if I could manage to keep my back to the wall as much as possible, that would give me the most coverage.
I'm happy to say that I have never since had to wear anything like that ever again for later gyn exams. It makes me wonder if this might be because so many patients who were confronted with that weird "gown-thingy" complained about it, which caused it to have a well deserved short period of use.
My question to other women here is, did you ever have to wear this type of "gown" for an examination? And if you did, were you instructed to place the "pants legs" in the front, or in the back? I'd really like to hear what you have to say about it because to this day, I STILL don't know if I put that damn thing on right.
