Perhaps I should offer my experience of an older male occupational health doctor, in order to provide a dose of reality?
May 2009. The private firm providing Occupational Health services to my employer had lost the contract, and were working out their notice period.
I was kept waiting for ages before seeing a nurse. Nothing out of the ordinary; height, weight, vision, blood pressure etc. Urine sample for Drug and Alcohol testing, I didn't need to empty my pockets and I was somewhat surprised by this. I signed the chain of custody forms and went back to the waiting room to wait for the doctor.
After what seemed like an age (probably twenty-five minutes or so) I was called by the doctor, and older male about 60-65. He didn't ask much.
He looked in my ears and got me to lift my t-shirt up to auscultate. On seeing my abdominal scars asked what they were for (nothing new there).
He listened for probably a minute, and his only comment was "I guess you don't like doctors then?" in response to my racing heart rate which is one of the things I notice when I'm nervous at the doctor. He signed the forms for work, and that was it.
There you have it: No undressing. No questionable examinations. If anything compared to my previous experiences with Occupational Health doctors he was a little lax... but they were only a couple of weeks from the end of the contract, so I don't think they really cared.Hardly the scenario that physical continually alludes to, is it?
