Several years ago I had an appointment at a military clinic. The corpsman took all my vitals and took me to a hallway and told me to wait in a chair outside the door of the PA I was to see. The PA had another patient and I figured I would just sit there totally bored until he was done with that patient.
There was an office where the doctor or PA did the preliminaries and an exam room. A door led between the office and the exam room. There were also doors from both rooms that led into the hallway where I was sitting. The doors and walls were rather thin and you could hear most of the conversation from the other side.
As I sat there, I realized the patient was a woman complaining about lower abdomen pains. The GYN department was on the other side of the clinic so I could not believe what I was hearing when the PA said he needed to do a pelvic exam. Then he told the woman what a pelvic entailed and what he was going to do. He told the her to go into the exam room and strip from the waste down. She would find...(couldn't quite hear). He would bring a chaperone with him when he did the exam.
After a few minutes, a female chaperone showed up. The PA knocked on the door between the office and exam room and asked the woman if she was ready. She replied that she was. When they first got into the room, the next several words were somewhat muffled. Suddenly, the PA seemed to start talking louder or his location in the room made it seem so, but I could hear most of the conversation again. Evidently, the woman was already on the table and in position for the exam.
While he was doing the exam, the PA explained every step to the woman but this time he went into detail about what he was doing as he was doing it. I did my best to listen to every word as he described each step of the bi-manual, speculum, and rectal procedures. Listening to the woman's occasional sounds of discomfort and the PA describing the insertion and extraction of the speculum were especially poignant.
All-to-soon the exam was over and the PA told the woman she could get dressed - he would go over the exam in his office. Back in the office, he told her the pelvic exam found nothing but gave her a prescription (don't know what for) - he would contact her when the test results were back.
When the door opened, I probably let out a gasp. The patient was a very young, extremely attractive oriental woman and my GYN medfet imagination really went wild. I must admit that for many years after, I often fantasized about the woman lying with her feet in stirrups on the exam table getting a full pelvic exam while the PA described, step-by-step, what he was doing.
