Till now I have been given anesthesia thrice. Once for an endoscopy and twice for colonoscopy. All the three times it was concious sedation. I don't recall the drug.
At the time of endoscopy I remember lying on my left side, facing the doctor. After the anesthesiologist gave me the injection, the doctor asked, are you feeling sleepy? I answered 'no' You will, soon, he said and was ready with the scope in his hand. Moments later I heard anesthesiologist telling the doctor "Done Sir". Those were the last words I heard.
I guess when the flow of the drug was stopped at the end of procedure I started coming to senses very slowly because I could feel myself being pushed and turned. Minutes later I found myself sleeping on my right side in the recovery area.
I didn't feel anything from my first colonoscopy after being given anesthesia. I only remember the prep before that, being given oxygen and getting connected to EKG. The next thing I remember is lying down in the recovery area with my dad standing at the bedside.
The prep for second colonoscopy was the same but this time even after being given the anesthesia I could feel the gown being raised from behind as I felt cool air from AC. I could even feel the gas they use to expand. During the procedure the doctor even asked "All ok, any problem"?. And even I replied "No nothing apart from the gas". It was like I was almost awake just that it didn't pain. Few minutes later he said, "It's done"
But strangely I don't remember or felt anything after that. How I reached the recovery area? I only remember being hooked to an IV line and someone telling dad "We put saline because his BP dropped during the procedure. But it will be normal soon.
To be honest, from the second time I didn't even realise who changed my clothes from hospital gown to my regular clothes. It would be dad obviously. When we met the doctor for post procedure consultation and asked him the reason for difference in experience between the two colonoscopies, he said we used a different drug this time.
