I am incontinent, and when I (very reluctantly) decided that I had to use diapers 24/7, I went on a "program" to analyze the level of protection that I need to prevent leaks. Inspired by the analysis done by Gary Evans at XP Medical, I took the dry weights of several diaper choices as well as the wet weights when I changed. I have a very accurate balance beam scale and entered the results on an Excel spreadsheet.
Note that I keep my fluid intake up to try to protect the health of my urinary system. On average, I produce 2.5 ounces of urine per hour. That is by weight, not by fluid ounces. (I believe that urine weighs about 1.07 dry ounces per fluid ounce.) Although I try to keep my fluid intake steady over the course of the day, my output varies considerably, from about 1.2 to as high as 4.5 ounces per hour.
Knowing this variability was important so that I could use protection that would prevent leaks even when my urine production was high. I tend to be a "dribbler" rather than a "flooder", but I do sometimes "flood" perhaps as much as 5 ounces, which can put a serious burden on my protection if it is already quite wet. I have also learned that I am very poor at predicting my urine output and even how much I have already wet my diaper. Therefore, reducing my level of protection can be a big mistake, and I try to be conservative and use more protection than I anticipate needing.
My analysis led me to use Abena Super diapers with a booster pad during the day. If my change will be away from home, I use an Abena Normal booster. If I will be home, I use a cloth baby diaper to reduce expense a bit. During the day, I change every five hours. When I anticipate not being able to change on schedule, I use Abena X-Plus, often with an Abena Maxi booster. (Based on my analyses, I believe that boosters provide the cheapest absorption protection.)
At night, I always use cloth for a period of about 9 hours. On average, my overnight urine production is about 3.0 ounces per hour, and I have recorded many nights when my diaper and booster pads absorbed more than 2 pounds. On average, I produce about 3-3/4 pounds of urine per day. A week's daytime disposable diapers probably weigh about 23 pounds.
More info than anyone wanted, I'm sure.
