Use good common sense. Mild soap, salt (a little) and plain water are Ok. Don’t start out going for exotic mixtures, large volumes or nozzles that you are unsure about. Start small and work your way up. One enema a week for first timers is fine, you will learn what your body can take and how fast you recover. Ask questions when you have them many of us have been doing enemas for 40 years or more.

If you have diverticulitis or asymptomatic diverticulosis (found on a colonoscopy)be careful about the volume(pressure). A perforated diverticulum is a terrible complication with peritonitis and surgery, perhaps even death.

They can be, if you get careless!

The two biggest dangers are dehydration and electrolyte depletion. Both of those things are very real, and you need to respond if you show symptoms!

Other than that, they're pretty safe, but watch it with long applicators, or attempts to get any applicator more than about 5 inches up. I'm not saying don't do it, but know what you're doing, there is some risk of scratching, or even tearing the wall of the colon. Know what you're doing before you do it, and if you even suspect that you may have pierced the colon, call 911 ASAP!

Just use a little common sense, and listen to your body, you'll be fine!

1. Moderation.

2. Enemas don't hurt.

Don't try to do too much the first time. It usually takes two or three enemas to get a good evacuation.

If you feel light-headed, hold off!

If you still feel like you have to poop, better to wait,

If you feel like you can't hold it, you probably can't!

Harmful? I think they are beneficial. I've been doing them for about 63 years, and (cross my fingers) enjoy good health. A little high blood pressure, and a little high cholesterol, but otherwise the machinery works great, and E's certainly seem to keep it clean, lubed and functioning well. I honestly believe that all the enemas I've taken over the years have had a very positive health benefit!

I have taking enemas for decades without any side effects. Enemas would only cause harm if you took them too frequently -- say more than two a week -- took hi-volume enemas too frequently or took dangerous liquids (such as alcohol) into your colon.

The question is ;Are enemas harmful in anyway? The answer is yes.If you use gasoline,paint thinner,alcohol,pesticides,carburator cleaner and a whole bunch of nasty stuff in your colon.

If not done properly it can be, never have the water too hot, you can easily burn your insides, also make sure if you use soap to use something like castile soap or ivory, you want a mild soap, I never do alcoholic ones, too risky

I have always heard that they can become addicting to your system. Your system gets used to the enemas, and disrupts the natural elimination that your body does automatically.

Basically too much of a good thing, is not good. I'm sure many will disagree with this, but is what I have always heard, and if you think about it seriously, it seems pretty logical.

I look at it this way if you're going to be addicted to something why not something that is good for you

While enemas aren't without risks, we as humans do far more dangerous things that people consider alright. I mean statisticlly drinking is more dangerous than enemas and I do both(not at the same time) and I'm still alive. People drink, smoke, use drugs, have unhealthy diets, run across busy intersections and the list goes on.

And I think symptoms for electrolyte imbalance are similar to intoxication, loss of motor function, nausea.

Could taking in to much water cause you to throw up?

I've heard, and was instructed in a class on giving colonics, that if you take in too much water, and it fills your large intestine, then starts to go into the small intestine, that can cause nausea and possible throwing up.

There are definitely things that could make enemas harmful. You want to use a mild soap, no laundry detergents or dish detergents. You don't want the water temperature to be too hot. You don't want to use alcohol as a general rule because it goes directly into the bloodstream because it isn't going through the stomach and the liver. You don't want to use ingredients such as vinegar because it is acidic and can really irritate the colon lining in a bad way, almost like a burn. You don't want to use high pressure, you want to hang the enema bag at a lower level so the water enters the colon at a gentle flow. You always want to take care when giving or receiving enemas! Barry
