Hi,
Earlier this week, the Polish press described the story of a female psychology student called to the so-called qualification before a military commission (generally, in Poland, the duty to appear for military qualifications applies to men, but also to some women who, in a given academic year, graduate in fields such as nursing, medicine, veterinary medicine or psychology). I thought it might be of interest to some of you, so I translated it and am posting it in full here.

"They called her before the military commission and ordered her to strip down to her panties. 'Do you want us to inform the prosecutor?'"
Justyna is 23 years old and studies psychology. Recently she was summoned to appear before a military commission. Once there, she realized that she had more in common with the other young women than not knowing why she was there.
A student to the army
Military service was the last thing Justyna thought about when choosing her field of study. Although a psychologist on the front lines is not unusual and is sometimes very needed, the only people who go there are experienced specialists. Certainly not young people who have not had much contact with patients yet, and especially not students of psychology. So when she opened the letter summoning her to appear before the military commission, she first thought it was a joke, then a mistake, and finally she was really scared.
"It's just a formality, don't worry", "just show up and get over it", "you'll see, it's nothing terrible", "you'll get the paper and forget about it" - her friends said, and she tried not to think about the worst. — "It's not that I wouldn't serve. I would do it, but only if I had to, not of my own free will", she admits honestly.
The call did not say anything about what the process would be to determine her fitness for military service. The first surprise was waiting for her when she arrived at the address indicated in the letter.
The military commission was waiting for Justyna in... a kindergarten. — "I was confused, then it made me laugh, and finally - when it was all over - I was downright disgusted. It's sick that something so disgusting could happen in a place where children stay".
The corridor was full of young women, most of them her age. — "I quickly spotted my colleagues from the university. After a short exchange of opinions, we realized that what we had in common was not only a complete lack of understanding of the situation we found ourselves in, because I was not the only one who did not know why I was summoned and what the evaluation would look like. There was something else: we were all final-year psychology students".
While waiting for her turn, Justyna noticed that her colleagues were leaving the office dejected. They looked away and avoided talking. Only later did she understand why.
"Are you really going to cause trouble?"
When she was asked inside, she saw three people in front of her: two older women - a nurse and a recordkeeper - and an even older man, a doctor. “I was immediately struck by their attitude, as if they were sitting there as punishment, irritated and tired of life,” Justyna recalls. Then a bizarre discussion began.
“Please undress,” she heard. - "But everything, down to the panties" - added the nurse when she saw that Justyna had only taken off her blouse.
- I won't strip down to my panties.
- How so?
- I just won't. I don't see any reason why I should do that.
- Are you really going to cause trouble?
— I'm not causing any trouble, I just don't want to undress. I'm on my period and it's uncomfortable for me.
- The doctor has already seen many things, and besides, it's a duty. Don't fuss. You'll undress in no time and that's it.
- I will not do it.
- Do you want us to notify the public prosecutor? You are such a young lady, what are you for?
As Justyna says, at that moment she was close to tears. She felt cornered and intimidated. She had no idea whether she might actually get into trouble with the law for refusing. What if it was true? What can these people do? She had her whole life ahead of her, she was just starting her professional career, maybe she should grit her teeth and just get through it? Thoughts swirled in her head.
Finally she said she wanted to go out, call and talk to someone close to her. No one spoke, so she turned and opened the door. As she was leaving, she heard: "Just knock before you come back. The doctor will decide whether he will admit you again."
“I finally got undressed,” she says quietly. — "I just got scared".
"I was seething with anger and helplessness"
She remembers what she heard during the examination vaguely. “I guess I repressed it,” she admits.
— The doctor began assessing my fitness for military service by kneading my breasts. What was this for? He wasn't even a gynecologist or oncologist, but a surgeon! - Justyna is nervous. — I stood there, seething with anger and helplessness, not knowing why I was there, or why I was forced to undress, or how it was possible that the doctor was looking at me almost naked and groping me. After all, these things are not crucial for military qualifications. It was disgusting.
Justyna's examination was accompanied by crude comments and jokes.
— As he finished, the doctor said, "I hope you don't have any surprises in those panties, like hiding razor blades or anything like that," and laughed. I was embarrassed. And not only me, because when I later talked to one of my friends, she admitted that she had also heard similar comments. The doctor commented, among other things, her thighs, saying: "Jesus, you have so much cellulite. You know it won't go away? It's too big."
Later in the exam, when the doctor assessed the posture, he also allowed himself to make comments. "You're crooked", "Your legs are so lopsided", "You'll have varicose veins", "do You eat anything at all?", "Your figure is poor".
After the examination, Justyna returned home quite quickly. She didn't feel like talking longer, and she doesn't think any of the girls did. To this day, she wonders whether stripping down to panties was enough, or whether her friends did have to stand there naked, and whether her period "saved" her.
Today, a few weeks after this incident, Justyna has very bitter reflections.
— Emotions have subsided a bit, but I still wonder why it has to be like this. The world is changing, but it's same old story here. Callousness, lack of respect, crossing boundaries. Sometimes I think: why did I study psychology? To stand in front of some old stranger and hear that I have to take off my clothes because if I don't, there will be consequences? I just wanted to help people.
