Growing up, rectal temperatures were common when I was home sick. I had it taken during pre admission testing to a pediatric ward and as a pediatric patient on the ward when hospitalized. Didn’t really dislike it but I did prefer a certain bit of modesty as a youngster.
As an adult I chose to return to the rectal method in my twenties. Had it taken rectally numerous times as an adult.
I prefer to have it taken if I’m getting a colonic or enema, which at times I did. Sometimes I got it while that was not always the case as some people don’t care to do it. Others did with no reluctance either as part of their procedures especially during Covid or at my request. I have also had it taken rectally prior to massage sessions.
I have a friend, a nurse who periodically stops in to see me if I ask her and she is able. She knows my preference is for a rectal temperature prior to the enemas or injections I am to get and takes it that way. She has used glass mercury, ( I prefer.
) digital and electronic.
Personally I feel it is the most accurate way to have it taken, particularly during an illness.
I have had circumstances where caregivers who had taken my temperature rectally, often remarked it was the best way. They also realized and expressed that they understood that many patients ranging from children to adults were not comfortable having it done.
