Being told you’ll receive a rectal exam

What is your reaction being told

Heart rate increases a lot. face gets flushed. more nervous sweat forms in my pits.

I more or less expect a rectal exam due to family history of prostate cancer. I'm actually more surprised if I don't get a rectal exam. Recently when I went to see my urologist to discuss my recent PSA levels he didn't do a rectal exam. But he did tell me: "at your next visit I will probably give you the Hello Finger". I just laughed.

Several years ago, I had a very attractive female primary care doctor and she would say "I need to check your prostate so bend over the table and underwear down". I always enjoyed it when she would put her finger up my ass to give me a rectal exam at my annual physical.

The first one I was surprised and embarrassed when she told me that she was going to give me a rectal exam. I was not expecting to be told that.

The second one shocked and caught off guard!! It was during a routine employment physical that I had been getting done every year for over ten years at the time. I had never been told that before during one of these physicals. He finished checking me for a hernia which was part of the routine. When I started to pull my pants up he said he wasn't done and then told me what he was going to do.

Now I kind of expect it during a physical not a big deal.

Not been told that yet. Fingers crossed.

I've never been told that I'd be receiving a rectal exam (outside of play situations, I mean)! The only rectal exams I've received from medical professional I got as a child, and they did not bother telling me what they would do.

I see the gloves, lube and tissues laid out so no surprise lol

I'll have a female urologist this summer but I'm sure everything will be laid out the same, unless she has to look at my genitals as well. I did have a potential kidney stone this past year so I might be getting other things looked at down there. I'm fine with the genital exam in addition to the rectal exam. My urology office is very thorough

Posted a more detailed account in another thread but mine was at a pre employment physical. I went in expecting a cursory exam and to pee in a cup for a drug test. The exam turned out to be extremely thorough. I was down to my underwear and the doctor instructed me to stand up and remove them. He stated he would be examining my penis and testicles, checking me for a hernia and doing a rectal exam. I was a bit surprised as I was about 27 yo at the time, but on the other hand not surprised as the physical was so comprehensive.

As a child I had anxiety issues about seeing the doctor. At age 14 I had to have a rectal exam (Finger, speculum and a swab) during my adoption physical. I had been seeing this doctor since I was 11 and she was always kind and respectful towards me. I was extremely nervous but to be truthful it was over quickly. I lived through it ok. My doctor had a good sense of humor. "You think that was uncomfortable? Wait for that first IRS audit."

My mom is a RN and knew what was going to happen but she remained silent (and she was not present during my physical) because she didn't want to give me the bad news and stress me out. I was silent and uncomfortable for a few days after but mom and dad gave me the breathing room I needed to work through the ordeal.

There's an initial feeling of anxiety followed by total awareness of being naked as I assume the position and spread my legs open. The sudden shock of the lube takes over my attention. Then the finger penetrates reaching steadily inside me. My sack hangs'while I feel twisting and pressure. My penis may throb as I cough and clench.

Recently, we went to Anthony's follow-up urologist appointment. Essentially, all they were going to do was go over his ultrasound results which were normal and a few questions we had about his bladder.

While there, we saw the female nurse practioner instead of his urologist. Same difference to us as she's very knowledgeable and is his right hand woman. 😃

Since Anthony has familial history of Prostate issues, she did use this visit to give him a rectal exam. I, as his wife and in the exam room with him, was excited haha. First time witnessing! He was nervous too but we both exchanged glances that told the other we had excited anticipation. She told him to undress from the bottom down...well, really, she said to just drop his shorts and underwear but he took them all off ha. Next, he put the drape over and sat on the table as we waited for her to come back in the room.

When she did, she had a female chaperone with her. She made a joke about how she had to be there as a chaperone and then said, "Yhe more the merrier!" LOL, I just about peed myself but she looked directly at me and smiled. I think she wanting to lighten the mood.

The NP wanted Anthony on his side but said if he felt more comfortable bent over the table, that was fine, too. So, I saw her lube her gloved finger, and then his anus. (certainly not enough!) Next thing we know, she shoved her finger in and he got on his tiptoes and moved slightly forward. He told me later on it was because she showed it in kind of roughly and not enough lubrication. It was something to member and for us to talk about after the exam, anyway!

For myself, I've not had a rectal exam BUTT I can say, I've had toys and fingers and thermometers inserted many a joyous time during play exams. Though I'd be nervous- as I usually am anyways, even during play exams,- when the time comes for a real rectal exam, I'll certainly be prepared 😉

I've never heard it called that. My previous doctor's office girl called it the ew ew test and I asked if she knew the ew ew bird? She replied that he was a great flier but a lousy lander. She knew him😄. So it was always the "ew ew test" at his office. My current female doc doesn't mention it at all but it's part of what she calls my nude physical. My female ARNP at the VA never called it anything and I never knew what she was planning to do to me. Sometimes she had a female trainee do it.

That was kind of interesting. My first appointment with Heidi (ARNP) in the late '90s, she actually gave me a pretty good physical which included bend over the table. As she stuck her finger in she remarked "oh you have a nice little one". Thinking about what she could see hanging down off me from her position at first I thought she was talking about something else until I realized she meant my prostate. I replied "I was thinking the same thing about your finger". That seemed to bond our relationship and I enjoyed seeing her every year. I never knew what she had planned each time until I was there. She knew I had a hometown PCP so she figured I was getting my real physicals from him --- of the big finger. Until she retired about 5 years ago the only time I got a real physical was when she had a trainee(s) to work me over under her supervision. Having been an instructor for much of my life I don't mind being used as a training aid.

I get excited. I love the feeling.

I now always expect the rectal exam from the urologist and my GP. I'm a little bit nervous and await the instructions for the position.

The PCP I had for 35 years used to stick his big finger in every year which also usually gave him the poop sample he wanted so I didn't have to do it. He retired 10 years ago and I have a new doctor now. She only stuck her finger in once after about 3 years at my request. I had the feeling she was a little shy about seeing me naked. This year she told my wife she had me scheduled for a "nude physical" when she told the doctor I was concerned about no one looking in the places I can't see myself. She kept her word and I was naked for the whole physical. She seemed quite comfortable with that and so was I. I have a whole new respect for her abilities and confidence now. She was alone with me, no others in the room. To me that seemed like mutual trust but I wouldn't have minded if she had other(s) in as observers.

Over the years it seemed that male doctors always had me laying on my side for the finger wave while all the females who did it had me bend over the table while standing. This year she said "I'll just have you roll on your side since you're already on the table". She also remarked about how small my prostate was which made me feel good.

To be completely fair, my first rectal exam was when I had my first ob/gyn exam. I had never had a Pap smear, let alone a stranger’s talons (sorry, but this woman had the longest fake nails I have ever seen and I was only 19 and had some modicum of embarrassment/innocence within me still) up my rectum and I had booked what I expected would be indeed a Pap smear and maybe an ultrasound in order to get a prescription for birth control and because it seemed like a responsible thing to do. This doctor’s fingers were everywhere and really deep inside my vagina, she used no lube, examined my external genitalia in a way that felt a fair bit extreme (do you really have to pull my inner labia to see how far they will stretch? They are attached to my body, you know?) and then, still with no lube, shoved one of her fat, taloned finger inside my rectum and one inside my vagina and pushed really hard on my lower abdomen with her other hand. I am not squeamish but I did not expect any of that and it was a very unpleasant experience. It was the last time I went to that doctor. My ob/gyn will do regular rectovaginal exams but will use lube and will give me the heads-up before he does it. He also has no talons, which really does help.

Like a few have said my general reaction is ok since I have mostly known I am getting a Dre before hand or probably will be. There have been a couple occasions where it was unexpected each different. The first was my very first one, I was in my teens and it totally took me by surprise, and my thoughts raced to humiliation, fear, curiosity and even some arousal. After having it done and realizing it didn’t hurt and that my butthole is just another butt to stick a finger in to the doctor, combined with the arousal, I have always looked forward to it and subject to many a medfet fantasy.

One of those fanatsies included having a rectal with my significant other watching it happen to me. I never thought this would happen. In my late 30’s I had a gf that would go with me to the doctors. I needed a colonoscopy and she convinced me to go to her gastro doc to set it up. So she followed me back and I talked to doctor as to why I needed one at my age and the prep I would use which was the otc laxative prep. I was sent back out to the waiting room to wait for someone to schedule it. 10 mins of waiting a PA comes and calls my name. I get led to an exam room with the gf in toe. In the room was a proctologist table, the type you kneel and bend over. Again almost all those thoughts came back especially arousal since this had long been a fantasy of mine when I was told right away to lower my pants and kneel on the table I needed a Dre first. I got completely erect before I even lowered my pants and everything was on display as I bent over the table. Both of them had a great view of my ass in the air and erection hanging down. My dre was like always quick and simple, yet the erection didn’t go unnoticed by my gf and turned into heated discussion in the car as soon as we left.

What kind of heated discussion? There are several different kinds.

One where nothing flattering is said and might very well turn into recriminations or accusations of having less than normal inclinations.

Some of both actually, at first she was really mad at me. Which added to my humiliation. I had to explain to her it wasn’t the PA that made me hard it was her presence. She finally understood that after a little thought and spun off that experience some.

I have had rectal vaginal exams at my previous gyn, but had one for the first time with my pcp. My reaction was slightly embarrassed but tried not to show it. Usually he has me and helps slip my underwear down to my ankles before checking down below and after will look at my rectum quick but since I’m now in my 30s he wanted to do a full on rectal exam. It was quick but still some what uncomfortable.

A lot of things. My adhd riddled brain goes a million miles a minute.
