I had a repair a couple of years ago of a hernia. Inguinal.
The op was in UK but paid for, not on the public National Health Service. It was advertised as done under sedation as a day case with patients going home as soon as possible with the sedative carefully arranged to make this possible. Of course, they explained once you got there before signing the consent that it all depended on how each patient reacted to the sedation. They also claimed it would be possible to travel home by public transport. Much less fuss and fewer rules than the standard routine in most hospitals. (Someone must pick you up; no discharge until the nurse meets who's picking you up etc.)
I was asked not to attempt any shaving before the op and that this would all be taken care of.
Stripped and in the theatre gown, I was wheeled into the operating room and a canula put in my hand. The anaesthetist warned me I'd be asleep at first but partly conscious later as 'sedation' suggested. There was no counting as I was told the sedation was going into my arm. I did rapidly fall asleep but was aware of voices and music playing later on.
After the operation, once told I could get up and get dressed, I discovered my groin and genital area had been completely shaved. I assume this was done under the heavy sedation at the start as also, presumably, injecting the local anaesthetic into sensitive areas.
However, I didn't wait to ask, even though the nurses checked me several times in the recovery phase. I just wanted to get home before the anaesthetic wore off!
