Enemas, frequency and affecting normal bowel movements?

Can anyone tell if taking Enemas too often, daily, weekly, monthly, etc. can effect you natural ability to have a bowel movements!

When we were kids growing up, mom gave us enemas when needed. We didn’t get enemas on a regular schedule, like some of our friends, but we might as well have had. Whenever one of us needed an enema, mom gave all of us enemas laying across our bed together. Once school was out for the summer, we spent a lot of time at our grandmothers. There, enemas were one on one or together. It depended on who was giving us the enemas and what the circumstances were. Though, not a week went by, that we didn’t get a couple of enemas from grandma or our teenage aunts. Like us, our teenage aunts enjoyed their enemas. They also enjoyed giving us enemas every opportunity they got. Made easier by grandma giving them the job of doing our evening bath, which included enemas beforehand when mom or grandma ordered. As preteens, after our RN grandmother taught us personal hygiene and enemas were our responsibility. My siblings and I started swapping enemas with each other and our weekly usage increased. Years later, after I was married, my wife and I used enemas for both health and pleasure on a weekly basis. And not once in all that time, did anyone have issues going normally after a couple of enemas within twenty-four to thirty-six hours.

Yes. I’m at the point now to where when I go it’s very loose for several days after a large volume enema. I use to get back to normal within 3 days now it’s upwards of a week. But I prefer just to go with the bag. Only time I don’t poop without my bag is if I’m pooping in my diaper.

Was taking enema many times a week for many years from my 20's on; no effect other than getting hemorrhoids from sitting so long. What has affected me is the large hernia that causes constipation - but my shower enema attachment alleviates that problem.

I took daily series of enemas for several years. After forgetting my enema equipment on a road trip, I discovered that I had become enema dependent.

Since then I usually take enemas once a week without a bowl movement in between.

I am unable to have a normal bowel movement even after two weeks.

So, yes I believe that taking too many enemas can affect normal bowel movements.

I'm 28 and have been taking enemas since i was 16, every other day. A 2-quart enema and hold it for 15 minutes. No effects.

For almost 60 years after a series of 3 to 5 enemas i am back to normal within 3 days

Well, there is me, my sister, my sister's girlfriend, and my sister's girlfriend's niece who live here. Well, the niece doesn't actually live here, but she might as well. All of us take enemas. For me and my sister, it is once a week and sometimes more. We don't need them, but we just like to do them. We noticed that if we went somewhere and could not take enemas for a week or two we still had normal bowel movements.

Sometimes for weeks at a time I will do a daily enema. Then for other weeks at a time not be in the mood. Things return to normal in a day or two of not taking any. Have been this way for 20+ years.

I take a enema every sunday morning and usually have a normal poop sometime monday.

I have taken enemas 2 to 3 times a week for 64 years. I always have a normal bowel movement within 2 days after my enema. When I was much younger I was taking an enema every day and I would always ‘return to normal’ within 2 days. I firmly believe an enema is good for my general health and I have very rarely been ill with colds, flu or whatever. I just did a Cologuard test rather than a colonoscopy and my results were NEGATIVE. Long live the enema!

It sure can! I have been totally dependent on daily soap enemas. I can’t have a bowel movement without an enema or strong laxative, which I HATE!! Just a few years ago, I was taking them every day and at times, both morning and night (and in between). Then last summer, per Doctor’s orders (hemorrhoid bleeding) he insisted that I take Dulcolax liquid to cut down on the amount of enemas I was taking. Still, I had to take almost a half a bottle of the stuff to make my bowels move - but I’ve never had the “cleaned out” empty feeling like you get with an enema. Ever. Furthermore, I AM a full blown klismo. So there is definitely a psychological as well as physical component of my enema dependency.

I HATE laxatives so now I’m taking Ivory soapsuds enemas about every 3 days. So yes, I am still enema dependent to clean out my bowels and probably will be for the rest of my life (or until my family or a nursing facility takes care of me).

I'm not actually sure what a "normal" bowel movement is. One colonic hydrotherapist told me that I should poo so smoothly, with no straining, that I should hardly need to wipe and the poo should sink directly to the base of the toilet pan.

For me it's never been like that. Aged eight I was sent away to boarding school and each term followed a cycle of a diarrhoea and then chronic constipation. School matron (house mother) was a lovely bubbly lady, but had firm views about the need for boys to move their bowels every morning. Doses of Syrups of Figs was followed by a discrete summons to her dispensary.

Oh my goodness the feeling of emptiness and freshness after that first enema are still bright memories nearly sixty years on. These days I irrigate almost every morning and have a colonic every four weeks and before and after holidays. I have discussed my regime with my wonderful broad minded colonic hydrotherapist, who is also a colo-rectal nurse in a major hospital. Her advice? "Go for it, it won't do you any harm"!

I definitely don't want to ever go back to feeling bloated, gassy and out of sorts. It's hard to feel sexy if your tummy is full of poo and who wants to have to use a public toilet?

And surprisingly, everyone tells me how well I look. I wonder why???

When my siblings and I were growing up, if one of us got sick, the doctor ordered daily enemas until the illness passed. Then advised daily prophylactic enemas for our siblings. But to mom or grandma, that advice was a prescription to be followed. Meaning, if things went as they normally did, one would get sick followed by another. So, by the time the illness had run its course, we’d end up getting daily enemas for a month or so. And once it passed, and the daily enemas stopped, we were back to normal bowel movements within twenty-four to thirty-six hours. Now, over sixty years later, I can still do daily enemas for a week or so and be back to normal in the same amount of time.

I haven't had a normal bm in a long time. A while back I went without an enema for 5 days with no bm. Then took a laxit8ve and an enema, got th8ngs flowing again. The amount of the bm with an enema, just easier, no straining. Is it harmful? I don't think so. If I had to go back to normal, I would load up on fruit and ruffage. Years ago it would take 3 days to get back to normal.

When I first met my ex-wife, she only did enemas for constipation or period cramps. She didn’t have any experience doing enemas for pleasure, unlike me and my siblings. Having received enemas from mom or grandma up until age six, then at age six and beyond, it included our two young aunts. Once grandma taught them personal hygiene and how to care for and give children enemas as preteens. From the beginning, we preferred the girls giving us enemas over mom or grandma. First, they were more like older siblings than aunts, being closer in age to us than mom. Second, in a lot of respects, they were just as innocent as we were. Third, they both like enemas as much as we did. Plus, on top of that, they enjoyed giving us and themselves enemas. So, once they started giving us enemas, the girls taught us how to make enemas even more pleasurable than they already were.

About six months after we first met, my sister and ex-wife shared an apartment. Over the year that they shared an apartment, out of convenience more than anything else, they swapped enemas with one another. My ex-wife learning from my sister, that enemas could be very pleasurable. Then, once we were married, we did enemas more for pleasure than need. The needed enemas, being taken care of by the wanted enemas.

I have always believed that the warnings concerning frequent enemas is overblown. Because I avoid those chemical enemas or laxatives, I have never had negative results from simple water based enemas. I have kept solutions, volumes, and temps very reasonable.

Many older medical texts confirmed this.
