I have been having Colonoscopies every 5 years or so since I was in my early 40’s. The first was because of blood in my stool from an annual exam and I have a family history of colon disease.
The first one I had had three options for prep. The first was golytely, the second was enemas til clear, and the thord was called “the apple juice prep”. This was in the late 80’s.
My wife had tried the golytely prep years ago, and it made her sick, I tried a little and new I wouldn’t tolerate it. I opted for the enemas til-clear. It was simple and just consisted of a clear liquid diet, an enema before bed, and 3 enemas in the morning/ I got good grades for prep. I wasn’t a diebetic then so the clear liquids were easy.
The next one was with a different Dr. and the doctor and I came up with a custom prep which included Mag citrate, enemas, and a final enema just before the procedure. Once again I got good grades for being completely cleaned out.
The third one was at ha famous local hospital and I brought in a visiting nurse service to do the enemas. This Dr. had his nurse give me a final fleets just before the procedure. She had me bend over with my elbows resting on the sink for the administration. She wanted me to hold it for ten minutes while sitting on the toilet. I told her I probably could not do that and just stood next to the toilet.
By the time I ready for my next one I had settled a clinic and with the urging of my wife I accepted the oral prep. There were far more options then. I settled on fleet phosphosoda because of the low volume. It didn’t work and the morning of the exam I was calling the office and the nursing service for help. The only help my doctors office being cleaned was to take more phosphosoda or re-schedule which was not going to work. So I got out my old enema bag and went at it. I got average grades for being cleaned out.
So since that time I have tried two more oral preps, none of which have proved satisfactory. One hardly worked at all. I always defaulted to multiple enemas. The last time they chewed me out saying that the multiple enemas caused musous to form making visualization difficult.
I’m about to schedule my next one and I honestly don’t know what to do. I am now on Ozempic and my diabetes is well controlled, but I am constipated all the time. So I think I will have to work with the clinic to figure it out. When I arrived for my last procedure, there was a chart on the wall with all the commercial preps available. When I examined it I realized that I had tried all of them with dismal results. Oh well I still have my enema bag.
