Dulcolax or Glycerin Suppositories

Was very excited to purchase some Dulcolax suppositories yesterday and I've had the chance to pop 2 up there this morning (right now). So far it's been 50min and I do have the start of that 'feeling' to go, but certainly nothing urgent, yet.

However, I know for certain had I popped 2 glycerine suppositories up there I would have had to visit the toilet some 20min after inserting them.

What's your experience with both types? Prefer one to the other? Find one more effective than the other?

Having said that, just short of the hour mark, I think I'll take a visit to the toilet....

Standard Dulcolax suppository are 10 MG, 2 is considered a cathartic dose . The Bisacodyl is in a vegetable oil base. Once in the rectum the suppository needs to dissolve in order to disperse the bisacodyl as the bisacodly needs to be in contact with your rectum mucosa. The label states works in most cases in 15 minutes to 1 hour. It can be more or less time depending on many variables.

If you want a more rapid effect puchase “magic bullets” ( yes that’s their real name), the difference is magic bullets base is water soluble so it dissolves faster and brings the bisacodyl into contact with your rectum quicker. Magic bullets can produce a bowel movement in as little as 5 minutes. The longer you resist the urge the more the urge will build and the more poo you will pass because the medication can create more irritation.

Glycerin suppositories come in 2 forms solid & liquid, solid requires delay time as some of the glycerine dissolves and disperses. The average glycerine suppository remains largely solid and intact when passed to toilet. Liquid on the other hand will be immediately available and will create a rapid near immediate urge as liquid glycerine is very challenging to retain.

Finally bisacodly is an irritant laxative

Glycerine is an osmotic laxative.

Bisacodyl is short cut, given enough time using the correct technique you can create the same need to use the toilet with your finger.

Glycerine works by drawing water into your bowel, the combination of additional water and the now more lubricated stool is what causes the need to use the toilet.

Osmotic laxatives and cathartics are the fastest acting of all the laxative (don’t ever take an osmotic laxative in the evening or at bedtime , because you will be up using the toilet instead of sleeping. On an empty stomach osmotic’s can work in as little as 30 minutes to 2 hours)

In spinal rehab we would be fed, given suppositories clean gowns and diapered and would rest until we all filled our diaper then changed and activities resumed, later into rehab we were taught to use our fingers where possible in case of emergency. Keeping the bowels moving in spinal patients can be a matter of life or death, not moving the bowels sufficiently predisposes us to something called autonomic dysreflexia and can be fatal.

@soapyfun happy to help. I used to get 2 Bisacodyl and 1 glycerine every other morning along with a ton Senna S and docusate nightly.

I will say long term Bisacodyl suppository use has one down side in that we all complained about, matter of fact we talked about it so much that you could mention “Butt snot“ and everyone was instantly on the same page. With long term use comes butt snot, about an hour after a bowel movement you would have a butt snot movement which is unique to bisacodyl, so rule of thumb each BM requires 2 diaper changes. Butt snot is clear to semi translucent white mucous discharge and is very slippery like any other mucous out of nose or throat

Also many people if insurance did not cover “magic bullets“ so made our own ammo. Buy an economy size bottle of tablets, the tablets are generaly 5 MG so for the same results as one suppository you need two tablets, anyway use a pill crusher and put the crushed tablets on a table spoon, add a little water and pinch of baking soda, this will both dissolve the Bisacodyl and neutralize the stomach safe coating making it usable. You can then add more water into a reused disposable enema bottle to create a fleet bisacodyl enema or just load into a piston syringe without additional liquid. Works just as a suppository does.

Without insurance coverage 100 magic bullets is around $70 ....100 generic bisacodyl suppository’s on Amazon is about $24, an economy size bisacodyl tablet bottle has 250 tablets for about $16 so that’s the equivalent of 125 suppositories. Also some people would use a used urinary catheter as a colon tube. Lubed an inserted high into rectum and using piston syringe will get you monstorous bowel movement because the intense stimulation starts higher than a SUPP or enema can get. Obviously getting the bisacodyl loaded that high will also be very crampy.

Funny… My mother had glycerin suppositories among her stuff, but I don't recall receiving any even when I was constipated… even though she gave me medicine as suppositories! I took some glycerin suppositories in adult life (seldom).

Glycerin!! Have used the magic bullet suppositories not a fan of the burn or cramping. My play partner at the time seemed to like them 🔥🍑

Your observation is right. Gycerin usually made me run after 15-20 minutes. I would choose glycerine definitely.

Glycerin for me any day, the others leave my ass burning for too long !

My Mom gave me glycerin suppositories on occasion until I was about 12, but then in my teens she switched to Dulcolax or cheaper generic bisacodyl suppositories when they became widely available. Sometimes the glycerin suppositories didn't work or just made me pass a few hard pellets of BM. The Dulcolax almost always worked and worked faster in about 10 minutes or less, but again often just made me pass a few hard pellets. The Dulcolax suppositories also gave me a strong burning feeling in my rectum, much more so than the glycerin ones. I'm not certain but I suspect that my Mom also used glycerin suppositories to stimulate a bowel movement when I was a baby and she was toilet training me because she always had a jar of the child sized suppositories in the bathroom.

I use Dulcolax to get my bowels moving. I use glycerin to help pass gas when that is all I want to happen.

Your not comparing apples to apples glycerin is hyper osmotic laxative dulcolax or generic Bisacodyl is a stimulant or irritant laxative .

Bisacodyl Is an irritant - basically it’s more aggressive than glycerine suppositories. I once had blood in my stool after Dulxolax so I generally avoid it, it’s too harsh for me. With glycerine you have to see what works for you. I learned that the 1mg does nothing for me. I take two 1mg or one 2mg when needed. Maximum 20 min later it provides relief

You are not the only one with this experience.

I’ve used both glycerin is my preferred suppository but occasionally I’ll use ducolax suppository with a soapy enema for a deeper cleansing

Glycerine are my preferred form of suppository as they are very easy to insert and are much more easier to tolerate.

I find that Dulcolax ones burn for me and don’t feel as comfortable to use.

But each to their own, depending on what feels good for you and gives you relief.

I use both. The Dulcolax will generaly produce a more complete evacuation than the glycerin though in common with several others who have responded on this subject it can cause some rectal bleeding. If there is a prospect of hard impacted stools being present I prefer to use two glycerin as they add a little lubrication to ease expulsion.

I've tried both. Glycerin support don't do much for me. I put it in an enema & that's much different

Why not both i like to insert two glycerin then 15mins later insert ducolax

I have personally never had much of a response to glycerin suppositories, nor have my play partners. My preference is to inject 5ccs of liquid glycerin into the rectum. Has never failed but too crampy for some.

Solid glycerin suppositories have no effect on me. The liquid suppositories take effect in 5 minutes. When I use Dulcolax suppositories, the effect appears in 10 - 15 minutes, but I also feel some rectal burning.

Three Fleets + 15 minutes = Go Time like clockwork for me👍

Glycerin,s are my preferred suppositories. They never fail after 30m and one suppository is enough for me. Normally I rely on a glycerin suppository for my pooping

I some times get feeling a little out of sorts with IBS with constipation. I just want some quick relief during those times so preferably I will use either a Dulcolax suppository or a fleet liquid glycerin suppository. The solid fleet suppository not so much, because they don’t work as well for me. The liquid glycerin work the fastest to have a good bowel movement usually in 5 minutes. A Dulcolax suppository works in about 20 minutes, a bit slower for me, but it has never not worked for me. You can trust that it will make you have a bowel movement soon. That being said, the Dulcolax suppository with my IBS often causes me a burning painful bowel movement that sometimes cause rectal and bowel irritation that lasts into the next day. Not a great feeling when you are at work. Generally I choose to use the fleet liquid glycerin suppository. But sometimes my constipation can get worse, then I will definitely use the Dulcolax if I feel I need it. LoL

I about bisacodyl (dulcolax) because it works too aggressively. Sometimes I have rectal irritation, and almost always have severe cramping from it. Once after using one, I had some minor bleeding which kinda freaked me out. Glycerine 3mg is my go to or alternatively I use lexicarbon carbonated suppositories. They aren’t habit forming, they work with natural gas, they work and affective with zero side effects

I like a small glycerin enema of 15cc mixed with 15 cc water. I ignore the initial urge to go during the first few minutes and wait for the second definitive urge.

I have used both. Dulcolax work but burn. Glycerin supositories work but take 30 minutes or so. What I like best and work best is liquid glycerin. I have used the liquid supositories that they sell and I have bought a bottle of liquid glycerin and injected it with a syringe. I have injected up to 5 cc but the volume doesn't seem to make much of a difference. After injecting liquid glycerin, I usually cannot hold it for 5 minutes before I am having a bowel movement. A lady enemate and I talked about playing a game where we injected each other with liquid glcerin and then see who could hold it the longest. We never got to play that game because I didn't have any more trips to her area.

I have Dulcolax and glycerin suppositories, and the liquid glycerin suppositories. I have found the Dulcolax to be a strong irritate but effect with some butt snot as discussed. They take about an hour to work for me. On glycerin suppositories, I generally have to use 2 or 3, insert them high. Sometimes I strong initial urge to go, but if held, the produce a good result and often i return to toilet more than once. The liquid suppositories are too hard to hold and somewhat effect. I found using a vegetable glycerin mixed with water half and half in either a 30cc or 50cc syringe to be very effective. The urge to go is strong initially but if you hold it, it subsides and then the second strong urge provides very good results and you I do often return to the toilet to poop more. This last option is also less expensive if you clean and re-use syringes and buy a large bottle of glycerin. And while I am not a fan of being diapered, I have been punished using this last option and made to keep the diaper on for an extended time until all business was finished.

I like both and use them interchangeably depending on my mood

When I do use glycerin I use several usually after some enemas then stick several glycerin suppositories inside me and hold them until they dissolve completely

Can take an hour to several depending how many I insert

Most I’ve done 10 after multiple enemas feels amazing and leaves you very wet with butt snot

I hate Dulcolax suppositories. They cause me pain and an urge to defecate for several hours.

I use Gifrer glycerine suppositories. They are gentle and 100 of them cost very little.

Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) suppositories are significantly more effective when I’m constipated. 60 minutes after inserting one, I’ll definitely be pooping my brains out. Not the case with glycerin (Fleet) suppositories. I’ll need at least 6 glycerin suppositories and much longer than an hour for similar results. The only down side to Dulcolax suppositories is that they can leave your rectum feeling irritated for a few hours.
