Temperature taken followed by suppository

In my childhood an elevated rectal temperature was always followed by a suppository to bring the temperature down and feel better.

Not particularly Tylenol, but yes mom gave us suppositories after RT even when we had the slightest sign of raised temperature. A kind of prevention, as she called.

As a young child I often received Tigan suppositories for nausea. My temp was of course checked rectally first. Decades later, researchers found the drug didn’t work.

After an RT , my mom would give me 2 glycerine suppositories. If I had a really hi temp, she would follow them with several cool water enemas and after waiting a period of time she would do another RT. If temp was OK, that would be it. If still high, I would get more cool water enemas. Once temp was down, she would do an RT every couple hours to verify.

My mother was a pediatric RN, who believed in rectal temperatures, regardless of age. If we were sick and had a rectal temp of 100+, we got a Tylenol suppository right after our temperature was taken. I have continued the practice with my husband, my children, and with other family members.

Here’s what our family doctor’s nurse advised when our then-high school daughter was running a high fever and throwing up. I remember being scared and asking if I should take her to the ER. The nurse said if her rectal temp is higher than 103, give her acetaminophen 650mg suppository. If her temp does not begin to come down within a couple of hours, take her to an urgent care.

If her rectal temp is below 103, sometimes it’s best to let her body’s natural defense fight the fever. However, if she is uncomfortable and feeling “like she’s burning up,” go ahead and give her a suppository. Take her temperature after a couple of hours, it should be down. I learned a lot from nurses during these anxious times.

I have never been subjected to this myself, but I have read plenty of stories with this. Usually, the suppository is inserted with the thermometer as well.

It’s rare that I have this type of reaction after getting a flu shot. I got the injection on Monday at a local pharmacy, and I’m now lying in bed with chills and a 102 temp. My dear husband in a minor panic made me turn over and took it in my bottom. (He panics easily when it comes to my health.)

Apparently, flu like symptoms are not uncommon, according to web MD. I have a box of Tylenol suppositories in the fridge that I got online during the Covid lockdown when our older daughter was ill with a fever. This is probably a good time to take one myself. Supps seem to work a little faster in the butt than the pills do in the tummy. My husband wants me to stay home and take it easy, but I have appointments this afternoon. Ugh!

Mom would always take my rectal temperature followed by a getting a suppository along with being put into a Huggies or Pampers diaper. The reason why I was always put into diapers is because after I got my rectal temperature taken and had the suppository inserted it would always cause me to have a bowel movement. So every now and then I would get my temperature checked and then have my diaper checked as well. So like if I was walking around she would come up to me sometimes and pull the back of my diaper to to take a look in and see if I needed a diaper change.
