Full body skin exam Monday

Monday I have a full body skin exam scheduled with a new male dermatologist, I hope he is more thorough than the last few I have had.

I want to hear how this works out for you. I had my first ever exam last summer and it was NOT a full body exam even though I explained to her with emphasis on the fact that I felt my first exam at 80+ years should be a FBSE. She scheduled me for another exam this summer which will be in July but she is moving to Florida and they gave me an appointment with another derm. I went to the office to talk with the girl on the desk and she assured me I would get a FBSE this time.

Good luck. I have had several dermatologists in the past decade plus Not one has done a full body check. Most of the time I am in a gown. Whether male or female, they seem to check head, neck, shoulders, back, chest the most. Even that seems to be just a naked eye look.

Many years ago I had a doc (now long retired) who brought his magnifying glass with him so he could really get a close look at anything suspicions ... Any look below the waist or in the groin area is a couple of seconds. In their defense, maybe they are checking the most likely areas for skin cancer, which I am told is upper torso. But I sense a reluctance on their part to check any intimate areas. I'm also told stuff happens there, and not everything they might see is skin cancer. I'm sure if I had a concern about anything in that area, they would look. That is, if I spotted it. I'm wondering if this annual exam is worth the time.

I love that feeling of nervous energy! I am so horny I jerk off so many times the weeks before and after an exam. I hope you enjoy these moments as much as I do, and I hope you tell us all about it and the juicy details when you get home (after you rub one out of course 😉).

I had my full skin exam last October and have been seeing the same female PA that I've seen for probably 15 years. Normally I undress to my undershorts and put the gown on but this time I told the male nurse who took me in that I was having itching issues in the groin area plus a few skin tags that I wanted her to look at. He told me to take everything off and put the gown on.

When the PA came in to do the exam, she examined the same areas that she always looks at (minus the genital and rectal areas). When she finished she looked at the chart and saw that I had mentioned the itching in the groin area. I could tell that she was somewhat uncomfortable checking that area because she mentioned putting the top part of the gown back on at that point (it was down around my waist) for "modesty" reasons. The only way she was going to be able to examine that area (scrotum and area just above the rectum) was for me to lie on my back with my knees apart.

Of course I was excited but she was not and it was obvious. The male nurse was still in there so it shouldn't have been a big deal. I slid down to the end of the exam table and pulled the gown up over my knees and did the frog-leg position so she could see the area. Sure enough it was psoriasis on my scrotum and immediately below it just about the buttocks (perineum) area. She mentioned the psoriasis area then I told her about the skin tag on the shaft of my penis (which has been incredibly annoying). She barely gave it a glance which really ticked me off--it was obvious she wasn't thrilled with this part of the exam.

Finally, I have another skin tag between the upper part of my buttocks and I told her about that as well. I flopped over on my stomach which of course caused the gown to fully open which was necessary for her to see the skin tag. I did her the favor by spreading my buttocks apart so she could see the skin tag but she blew it off saying it would be painful to remove either one.

Long story short, dermatologists rarely examine the genital or rectal regions without being forced into it in my opinion which is sad. A complete skin exam is supposed to include these areas. It has made me consider switching to the male PA that they have in the same office to see if his exams are more thorough than hers. She USED to pull my undershorts down in the back to just do a quick visual glance of the buttocks but she doesn't even do that anymore. It's all about modesty and fear of lawsuits and pushing patients through today.

I thought I was seeing a dermatologist to HAVE her look at the places I can't see myself and probably wouldn't know if I was seeing anything bad if I did.

It went well, it was quick. I had to wear a big paper gown and instructed to leave bra and panties on. He looked around my underwear. Not nearly as thorough as my annual physicals.

So it wasn't as thorough as you hoped for?

That seems to be the way it is for me too. My TBSE is coming up in July and they promised it would be thorough. It's with a different derm because the one from last year is moving away. I hope she does what the office girl promised.

Because you are new to each other, he may have been a little more conservative this 1st time. As you get to know each other on subsequent visits, he may ask if you want certain areas checked, or at least ask permission to check certain areas before proceeding.

For my 1st exam with the lady dermatologist i used to see, the assistant told me i needed to wear a gown because I was male and she was female. Every visit after that which was twice a year, they didn't stress wearing the gown, so i didn't. Figuring my skin needs to be seen and examined anyway. She felt more comfortable with me as we got to know each other a little more with each visit. At one point, she actually told me, "you're too cool to be normal". Wonder if she still felt that way after i started wearing jockstraps to my skin exams

@Trot01 I believe you’re correct about just naked eyeing high risk areas. I’m always seen by residents at my dermatology appts but my attending takes special interest in me and he always comes in to see me and give me a once over. I’ve noticed he always quickly looks at my scalp, shoulders, back and chest without saying much or explaining why. Took me awhile to catch on to the fact he was checking my moles and seeing if anything else stood out (he knows I use tanning beds) because I originally thought he was just looking for psoriasis plaques. The last time he moved my gown forward himself since it was wide open in the back and I noticed from his side stance he could see my genitals as well. Seems like they definitely try to minimize exposing intimate areas these days unless it’s the primary complaint area.

That's not good from a patient satsfaction standpoint. I have seen that you need to ask things that are not done routinely by doctors (that list is increasing every year in the US).

Maybe next time, let the doctor know beforehand that you'd want a more thorough exam with all nooks and crannies checked out - they may allocate more time for you in the schedule and you will not feel rushed during the exam. If you don't ask, they do the bare minimum and move on to the next patient
