Are RTs more embarrassing for girls?

Since girls have a shorter perineum, (parts of) their genitals are visible when taking their rectal temperature. This is pretty much independent of the position. Even if you spread their butt cheeks in prone position, the Venus lips become visible, perhaps more. Do you think RTs are more embarrassing for girls?

A nurse, perhaps on this site, once reported girls objected more adamantly to the procedure than boys did.

Never having been a male I can’t say if it’s ‘more’ but it’s pretty damed embarrassing.

At the risk of sounding provocative, the question is entirely naive and makes a lot of assumptions. It will be interesting to see how females respond. Thus far I am agreeing with Nurse Philips, it has to register as embarrassing.

If you are talking about females under the age of 21, ask: how often would a rectal temperature be needed, given today’s technology for determining body temperature?For most boys and girls, not adults, the procedure when and if necessary, is no doubt for most of them, embarrassing . It might be that the exposure of their buttocks and anal opening would be more of a chagrin than their penis/ testicles or vaginal region.

As Mom to two grown daughters (also “Mom” to my husband, lol), I believe females react more emotionally to being exposed down there for medical purposes. Yes, it's embarrassing, particularly during the growth years through the teens, whether it's a nurse or Mom who needs to take a temperature, insert a tube or medication, or another form of unwanted attention. I can't speak for teenage boys, but certainly my husband if he's really sick, when faced with “Mom” standing by the bed shaking down a rectal thermometer, he gets sooo quiet.

I don’t know about RTs being more embarrassing for girls.

When my mom had me in the bathroom for an RT or an enema, I was not embarrassed because I was naked but because I was afraid whatever she did would create pain.

I would think that it depends on the girl, and the circumstances. Is she having her rectal temperature taken in front of others? Is it her first time having her temperature taken up her ass, and she’s 18, and never had it taken rectally before? I can understand why they would be embarrassed. I don’t think that most guys would feel any different.

I would say NO and I have some evidence to support my opinion. Years ago I dated a girl whose step sister was a nurse at a pediatrician’s office and we’d occasionally go to her house for dinner. I remember one night she told us about how difficult her job often was because of the way some kids behaved there. She said most of the kids were good but occasionally things got crazy when boys would scratch, bite and kick her as she attempted to give injections or take their vital signs. She thought it was funny how boys were usually the wimps and the girls were more brave, and that boys were much more embarrassed to be undressed. I asked her what caused these extreme reactions from boys and she said giving shots topped the list but what she called “temperature time” was often as difficult. She said that the rectal thermometer was often met with much resistance from both boys and girls but that boys resented her for it way more. I explained to her how much I hated rectal temperatures at the doctor’s office as a boy largely because female nurses always did it. This really surprised her because it wasn’t something she had ever considered before. She said her and the other nurses assumed it was simply because boys were generally more aggressive than girls. I also told her how rectal temperatures became even more humiliating when they continued into my preteen years and that I also reacted quite aggressively a few times.

So, given that rectal temperatures were usually taken by moms and female nurses I assume they were generally much more embarrassing for boys than girls. Girls seemed a bit more comfortable with mom or a lady nurse taking their temperature rectally while most boys hated having women perform such an invasive procedure. Of course it caused girls embarrassment but boys experienced both embarrassment and humiliation. My rectal temperature was only taken once by a male (my pediatrician) and it was far less embarrassing than when the nurses did it. Me and my brother hated getting rectal temps but my sister wasn’t nearly as bothered by them. I actually talked to her about it a few years ago and she said the only thing she remembered hating about doctor visits was getting shots. I also don’t think girls experienced the strange sexual arousal that boys did when a woman inserted lubricated thermometers into their rectums. Erections felt good from looking at pretty girls but they felt disturbing when caused by rectal temperatures. I felt guilty and shameful that a thermometer in my butt made me feel horny and that it was a dirty little secret I had to hide. For me, the rectal thermometer was kind of like my first sex toy experience and I found that extremely embarrassing. Not only was I embarrassed that some strange nurse was doing it but also that my mom was sitting there watching.

@ANTONX......It is most definitely more embarrassing and humiliating for males of any age. Male butt /anus is the most vulnerable, embarrassing, private place on a guy, and showing it or having something done to it is extremely submissive.

I find it fascinating how many RT posts there are on here. I would certainly find it embarrassing..more than a guy? I really don't know. But I have never , ever had a temp taken that way.

I think it affects/ affected mostly people who are/were older, age of reason who may have experienced it when very young, both males and females.

There are those who don’t have nor did have issues with it, no doubt.

There too, are those who enjoy it as part of a sexual nature or medical fetish.

And yes, there are those people, many adolescents, preteen and teens, and adults who for whatever reason(s) have their temperatures taken rectally and are embarrassed by it, and strenuously object to it.

On a positive note, it is probably nowhere as common as it was in the past and not done, unless truly necessary.
