Diastat

Diastat is a small enema or liquid suppository, if you prefer, that's given to seizure patients as a rescue med. The literature makes it seem as though very little concern is given to the patient's privacy and the procedure is often carried out in public. I suppose this is because some seizures can be life-threatening. Has anyone ever seen Diastat administered to another person or had a Diastat injection?

I never saw it used, but it was stocked on pediatric and epilepsy monitoring units where I managed the drug storage automation. Usage was rare. The active ingredient is diazepam, AKA Valium.

Side note: Seizure Alert dogs can sense an upcoming seizure and alert their handler anywhere from 45 seconds to several minutes before onset of an epileptic seizure.

It’s use has become somewhat routine since I retired , it was not common when I was on the job . Since being retired I have received it many times during my own seizures , it remains an active fall back position for status epilepticus , I can receive two instillations independent of medical care , if a third is required it needs to be under medical supervision of current medical professional ( my previous certifications don’t mean squat when I am the patient ).
