A palpitation — a skipped, extra or irregular heartbeat — is a type of abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. It occurs when an electrical signal fires from the wrong place at the wrong time, causing the heart to beat out of rhythm.
An irregular heartbeat, such as racing, fluttering, or skipping a beat, is usually harmless. Even in cases when palpitations are frequent and bothersome (which occurs rarely), reassurance may be the only treatment needed.
The 5 most common cause of skipped heartbeats are :
1. Anxiety and stress
2. Caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and medications
3. Atrial fibrillation (A-fib)
4. Heart disease
5. Overactive thyroid
Although frequent heart palpitations may not be serious, it’s important to be evaluated by a doctor to make sure you don’t have a condition causing an irregular heartbeat. This evaluation is best done by a cardiologist, who can also detect some of these conditions with a careful history and physical examination.
