It never ceases to amaze me. A person can't poo. They've tried sitting on the toilet and bearing down, but nothing comes out. So they try again to push the poo out, but nothing happens. And they realize they need something help.
Some take a stool softener, like Colage or Miralax, in the hope the med will soften the hard poo enough so that, on the next toilet tip, they will be able to bear down enough to squeeze it out. This sometimes works but almost always takes at least 12 hours, if not a couple of days. Sometimes, no matte how hard you try and push, nothing comes out.
So you try a laxative med. It can be by mouth or by rectum, but they all do pretty much the same thing… stimulate your colon muscles, strongly, more strongly than you can by bearing down, and they push the poo out. The stronger they push, the greater the cramping. The harder the poo, the more strongly they have to push.
So, if you're badly constipated, there are really only two options: Soften the poo or push the poo out. The choice of methods can vary anywhere between these limits… soften alone, soften and push, push alone. You take your choice and experience the result.

I hope you don't mean to break up the Dulcolax pills. They will supposedly cause camping anywhere in your GI tact. They are coated so that doesn't happen until they get into your large bowel where the camping has a laxative effect.
