Michael Gets The Measles Book

Anyone remember this book? We had it in my school library when I was a kid. You can see Michael getting a rectal temp.

I've never seen this before. I guess if it were written today, he'd get a digital temperature in his ear or he'd stand in front of a laser thing that read his forehead - neither of which can possibly be accurate.

I remember being fascinated by that illustration when I was in 2nd grade. I would hide in a corner and turn to that page when no one was looking. Much like the picture my mom would take off both my pajama pants and my underwear then lay me on either her bed or my bed for a rectal temp. Brings back memories.

There are a whole bunch of medical books in that series. In another, “Karen Gets a Fever” her mom takes her oral temp in the middle of the night but basically threatens a rectal if Karen didn’t stop talking…

I’ve never seen this book but there were other children’s books that had similar illustrations or pictures.

How marvelous. I had not seen this book but it's clearly rather dated. Loved the “special stick” reference and the picture of him with it protruding from his bottom!

I did see the picture in the book of him getting the rectal temperature and it is cute because that is the way a kid should get a temperature at that age it was the most accurate and that's how my mom did it when I was that age

I had not seen this book either, but I do recall an old Dr. Spock book mom had, a hardback with a gray cover dated in the 1950's it had a few pages about temperature taking with a drawing of a baby with a thermometer in its rectum. I also recall a home nursing book mom had with a few drawings of rectal temps and enemas. No idea what happened to either book. I also recall a Sesame Street episode where the Muppets were all dancing around with pictures on sticks of a rectal thermometer, vaseline jar, a shot, and a vapor rub jar because someone or other was sick.

Yes! Here's the exact text. "No fooling around," her mother said firmly, "or else I'll take out the rectal thermometer that I used when you were a baby." That shit would never fly today. The mom is basically saying “I'm going to stick a thermometer in your ass if you don't shut up”.

I’ve never heard of that, but it would be nice if someone would turn those ideas into modern day fantasies, then sell the video.

@RTFixation In France there were phrases such as “une fessée et au lit” (= “a spanking and in bed”, about unruly children) and “un suppo et au lit” (= a suppository and in bed, presumably about a sick child). Again this would not fly today.
