Commercials on rectal thermometers

Was there any commercials on rectal thermometers or enemas in the 1950s or 60s or 70s in your countries ? If so can some one please post it?

There was a laxative Ducolax suppository radio commercial in the 1980s in the U.S. I also remember seeing an ad in a woman's magazine from the early 1970s that showed a boy lying on his side facing the camera with a group of mothers standing on the other side of the bed. It was fairly obvious he just had his temp taken rectally as his mom was reading a stubby bulb thermometer. I think the ad was for a fever medicine.

It's not technically an ad but I've seen photos of the packaging for a 1980s glass rectal thermometer with an image of a school age girl sitting on her mother's lap while mom reads an obviously rectal thermometer.

I remember a commercial in the early 90s for one of the first ear thermometers. The commercial focused on the ease of use in infants compared to the rectal thermometer. At the end they showed a man cowering in bed with a scared look on his face and the female narrator said the thermometer “also works well on your big babies” which semi-implied his wife usually took his rectal temp.

@DoctorJohnny2: Do you recall the age of the kids in the commercials? This is to estimate at what age, in the 1970s and 1980s, it was considered perfectly ordinary to take a kid's temperature rectally.

There weren't any kids on the radio commercial and a baby was in the TV commercial but of course it's temp wasn't taken on air. The kid in the magazine ad must have been 5-6.

When the ear thermometer first came out, there were commercials that showed an animated baby, then later on in future ads it featured a male figure. There might have been references to older children too; ( and their eyes were exaggerated and shown as bulging in fright) where the ad shows or begins with something ( I’m paraphrasing) like “You’re going to take my temperature, where!!?” I believe it was the BRAUN brand tympanic thermometer.

I remember seeing an ad for BD thermometers sometime during the mid 60's, where it showed a young girl under the covers, and a woman, apparently her mom, reading the thermometer, with a concerned look on her face. It had a pear-shaped bulb, and the girl looked probably around 7-10ish. Then a few years ago, I saw a video commercial from France, which showed a woman taking her young daughter's rectal temp, with a digital thermometer. It showed her placing her daughter on her stomach, then lubricating the thermometer. It didn't actually show the temp. process, but after it was taken, the mother appears to be pulling up her child's pants. Finally, it shows the mom reading the thermometer, after taking it out. The title was something like: “Aprende le temperature.”

@JJM Does it seem realistic for a mid-60s mother to take a rectal temperature on a 7-10 year old child?

For the French title, probably “prendre la température”.

In the 1960's, it was not uncommon for a rectal temp. to be taken on young children, depending on the family, and the advice of their doctor. This would apply to the U.S., at least. In many other countries, rectal was done on all ages, and I don't think that anyone was embarrassed by it, or thought that it was weird. With the new technology, and cultural attitudes, I truly doubt that you'll find rectal temps. being taken at any age these days, unless it's by personal choice.

My doctor in USA did rectal temps to age 13, then after that asked how you wanted it taken. I turned 13 in 1971, We lived in Rapid City South Dakota.

Not really a commercial but the doctor had pamphlets on rectal temps, enemas etc. They all had pictures in them to show parents how to do it. They didn't actually keep oral thermometers in the exam rooms, so the nurse actually had to leave the exam room to get one. I recall very well the two thermometer jars in the rack with the vaseline jar, both had red tops. I never minded rectal so just let the nurse take it that way till I joined the US Navy at age 18 once in the Navy, I didn't get an RT from a doctor, or nurse.

@JJM In France, when I grew up, rectal was done on all ages, but you were expected to insert the thermometer into yourself once old enough (and not incapacitated). Contrary to some of the US experienced noted here, a nurse in France would not have inserted a thermometer rectally into a 13 year old capable of doing so.

In USA no child would be allowed to insert their own thermometer, or be under the covers, in hospital or at home, as far as I know. I was a 60's kid and a 70's teen.
