I wouldn’t say I was shocked when this occurred. More pleasantly surprised.
Returning from an overseas military assignment, I landed in California where I stayed a few days, a few hours of one in a facility that did colonic irrigation and enema treatments . A friend from California I knew in the military recommended the facility.
I made the appointment. After filling out a history, and agreement about my treatment, a nurse came and got me and brought me to a room where the enema(s)would be administered. I received three.
She had me strip to my socks and boxers. I was weighed, had my height checked, BP and pulse taken. Then she had me get on the table. I noticed a very obviously placed stand with a full clear enema bag hanging on it. There was tubing extending from the bag, wrapped around it, ending with a long thick black nozzle. A metal tray on a stand adjacent to it, had a few items on it . Plastic gloves, a jar of Vaseline and a second one, much smaller with a thermometer next to it. I didn’t think about my temperature being taken, but I didn’t ask, either.
Then the nurse explained the procedure ( the administration of the enema) and asked if I was ok and still wanted it. I said yes.
She instructed me to lay on my stomach. I complied. Soon she was sliding her hands beneath the waistband of my boxers lifting the waistband having me raise my hips, and lowering them. Then she took the thermometer on the tray, picked it up, held it up, read it, shook it down rapidly, held it back up, read it again, then put it into the small Vaseline jar, lubricated it and then coming along side the table I was on, bent over me and with her fingers, parted my buttocks, deftly inserting the instrument. It was in my rectum for a few minutes, then removed and read.
About a minute later, the enema was started and it was a rather intense experience!
My only surprise was getting my rectal temperature taken, but I never questioned it not really thought to ask about it.
Sometime later I read my copy of the paperwork for the treatment which said that prior to an enema or colonic that when vital signs were taken all temperatures would be obtained rectally, but could be oral if rectal was not wanted.
Even if I had seen that, I don’t think I’d have had an issue being I was going to get an enema.
A few years later, going back overseas from California I returned to the facility, had a few enemas administered, and everyone was preceded by a rectal temperature taking during my vital signs. I was no longer surprised but eagerly awaited the rectal temperature takings I would get.
