Drug Store windows

I agree with all of you regarding the unfortunate demise of those displays that captured our attention and imagination. I was lucky to grow up in proximity to several independent drug stores. Those mom and pop types were far more customer oriented and catered to those personal needs.

One of my early purchases, around age 10 or so, was a bit intimidating. I was looking and rummaging through the enema/douche supplies on the shelf when I was approached by an older clerk. She asked if she could help me. I'm sure I stuttered and stammered that I needed a fountain syringe. I had learned that using appropriate terminology may give me a mature appearance.

She showed me several items on display and opened some of those drawers with multitudes of nozzles and fittings. She also questioned me at length about the intended uses. I answered as best as I could. I finally found an out and excused myself to run home and ask my mom. I figured that my ruse about being sent by mom was about to be exposed. I was breathing heavily and overwhelmed with embarrassment.

I left the drug store and returned about 20 minutes later. I had regained some composure. I told her that my mom just needed a syringe for family use and wanted something for douching as well as enemas. Our old one was leaking. She sold me on a combination syringe and I paid for it with some hard earned money from cutting lawns.

Hiding that equipment at home was challenging but well worth the privilege of having my own enema bag with a black douche nozzle. I learned early on that buying equipment from those drug stores was a great experience in it's own right. I never pass up one of those independent drug stores some 50 years later.

I remember going to the drug store with my Mom many times, but one time stands out above all others. I was somewhere around the age of 10 and had just left our family doctor's office for a booster shot. We had gone to the store for some insulin for my father. While Mom waited at the pharmacy counter, I mo-zeed over to the isle where the enema and douche syringes were located. Mom always knew where I went when we were in that store so I did not tell her. Well, on that particular day, I was standing in front of a Rexall Victoria Combination syringe box just like the one my Mom used on me. I got up enough nerve to open the box and in it I found a new orange colored bottle, similar colored tubing, a new silver shut-off, and several black nozzles. I had just picked up one when a lady that was friends with my Mom came over and put her hand onto my left shoulder. I looked up thinking it was Mom. But, I soon discovered it was not. I was a little bit embarrassed to say the least. She spoke softly to me saying, "Mike, I see you like enemas as much as I do." I shook my head and said "I really do like it when Mom gives me one." She had me shut the box and took me to my Mom. After a little small talk between Mom and her friend, her friend said "Mary, guess where I found your son?" Mom grinned and said "over there at the enema section I bet." Her friend said "how did you know?" Mom spoke again saying "that is where he always goes when I am in here." Mom's friend then spoke again saying "I bet I know what you will be giving him when you guys get home, don't I?" Mom grinned and said, "well, I hadn't thought about it, but, if Mike wants one real bad I think I can help him out." With that said Mom looked at me and asked "Son, do you want your Mom to give you an enema when we get home?" I smiled and hugged her saying, "Mom, I love you!" And you know what Mom did not disappoint me either. Love you Mom!

He was raised in the suburbs of a major city. Most of the drug stores he knew were chain stores in strip malls.

Most really didn't use display windows by that time, to cut down on vandalism.

I was born and raised during the 30's and 40's. I was as a youngster and a teenager known as a "Drugstore Cowboy" and eventually became employed there as a "soda jerk" and later worked my way up to "drug counter clerk". As a true lover of a "good enema" if was a fun job being around those displays and even more fun selling the Enema equipment to the Neighbors.

One chapter in "To Kill a Mockingbird" begins with some locals standing in front of the Maycomb pharmacy looking at the display of enema bags in the window -- mostly to seem distracted. But there they were, in print.

I was traveling in Switzerland as a young teen, circa 1966. I came across a window display at an "apothecary shop" that had the most amazing display of rubber goods for sale; enema and douche bags, cans, and nozzle sets. I just remember the quality and selection being unlike I've ever seen again.

When back in London, I visited a druggest shop and purchased glycerine suppositories. Unlike the waxy, wet, misshapen ones we are all familiar with, these came in a rectangular metal tin with a white waxed paper lining. The suppositories were fatter and shorter (gum drop shape), and had a dry gelatin casing. When you got them wet, they became very slippery, so no lubricant was required for insertion. I would use two and when i couldn't hold them any longer I would go into the W.C. (water closet) which was a toilet in it's own.. well closet. It was large, placed upon a foot high platform and fed from an elevated tank high up the wall - flushed by a chain with a wooden handle.

I don't remember extensive displays like in windows but the pharmacy that our family used had a well stocked assortment of bags and bulbs. Come to think of it the supermarket had a good selection as well. In both cases these were found immediately next to the feminine hygiene items.

I spent a week in Cancun about 20 years ago. Not the fancy resort hotels on the beach, but a more modest place near the center of town. The hotel had a pharmacy on the first floor, and there was a plastic enema can with hose on display on a shelf. I didn't know much Spanish, and wasn't sure I could talk my lady friend into it -- pretty good chance I might have. So there it was for all to see, and maybe saw action now and then.

In the heyday of drugstore displays there was competition between the rubber manufacturers to produce syringes of superior quality. Those syringes boasted heavy durable construction guaranteed for five years of service. The black vulcanite nozzles were sprayed with hot wax to produce a satin sheen. There was a bonanza of different nozzles for the adventurous youth to sample. Opening the box on a brand new syringe released the heady aroma of vulcanized rubber with that hint of sulphur. The new tubing was a brown/orange hue that has disappeared except on eBay. Clever hose clamps emitted an imperious click that signaled the flow of agony had commenced. For those of us brave enough to stroll up to the counter with a new enema bag. There was ample reward later in the bathroom.

No matter what we manufacture, there is always a greedy soul that can make it cheaper and cheesier with white plastic, flimsy polyethylene bags packaged in small boxes so that the contents are all kinked & wrinkled. To add insult, the local big box store placed a combo bag returned by a dissatisfied customer on the pharmacy shelf. It has been there for months.There are laws against that. Buyer beware.

What great memories of all the different styles of bags, nozzles and bulbs that were all just a part of mainstream life back in the 50's when I was growing up. I was fascinated by all of it and would be drawn immediately to the aisle or display counter where the feminine hygiene or sickroom supplies were. Like a magnet, I couldn't help but stare at all of it. I used to love seeing women handle the equipment and would imagine some lucky kid will be getting an enema soon. To this day I still check out the drugstores, but there's really nothing but junk available. Fortunately, there's some pretty good equipment available on the internet. We need to support those suppliers or they'll soon be a memory too.

1949 I was in the 4th grade in Parkland,Wn. I would walk home from school past the local drugstore. I would saunter Slowly past the window, trying not to notice but desperately wanting to just stand there and look closely at the display. There were rubber gloves, Rubber urinals, Male and female external urine collection devises. Now that is just a memory but a very pleasant one to return to from time to time.

Sadly, I think we are going the way the U.K. is now--no enema syringes available, just disposables. They have to go into a sex toy shop to find syringes.

But I loved going into pharmacies in the late 60's and putting a free packette of Massengill Powder into every box of flat rubber goods, or douche bulbs. That was expected in my job and I loved it! Always came out of the store with a raging erection.

In the 1970's drugstore there was a counter that had a glass display window. This counter was next to the prescription pickup. There were bags, bulbs, hoses and nozzles in that case. While waiting for my prescription to be filled a very attractive woman asked to see some of the douche nozzles. The clerk got the ones she pointed out and she looked them over and handed them back one by one saying "no not that one". She purchased two of them and a hose and bag saying to the clerk "don't you have a larger one"? She paid for her items looked at us and gave a very cute smile and left. The other two customers (men) and I were watching her butt as she walked to the door. Not a word was said, all of us were letting our minds run wild.

Deltin's comments bring to mind a couple of experiences I had that seems like from another era somewhere back in the 60s, but just came to mind when reading all these posts.

As a high school kid I played in a small dance band with a mixture of really entertaining people from my home community. One was the local pharmacist that owned the drugstore in town. One evening during a break in a practice session and after a few beers he was pretty limber and shared his day's experiences with the group.

Seems the highlight that day was the area sales rep for one of the brands of rubber products he handled coming in and showing new products she had to his staff. He commented that she pulled out all the stops since they were one of her larger accounts and she was hoping for a big order. Evidently she had a new assortment of nozzles, douche pipes and other things that was the big promotion item that was "customer accessible" meaning it was a cabinet with all kinds of drawers containing the various nozzles and other things. Included with it was a sizable display topper with the items mounted and the drawer number containing the item listed underneath it so there was little doubt you knew what you were getting.

He was quite an entertaining fellow and about then reached into his trumpet case and pulled out a flexible douche nozzle of sizable proportions and held it up for us to see along with a few other nozzles. You can only imagine the comments from the all male band members as I can remember blushing from embarrassment since I'd not seen many such things at that point in my life. I got my share of heckling from the older guys over all of that. I always wondered how many of the guys wives were encouraged to head to his store to pick out their choices. And yes, I did check out his store to see the display which was surrounded by a large assortment of bags, syringes, etc. I think the sales rep made her commission for the month.

When my wife and I purchased a home a number of years later it turned out that our new neighbor was also a pharmacist in the town we had moved to. He had a coffee bar in the drugstore and one day while sharing a cup he invited me to go into the back of his store. On the large sorting table were a number of syringes, bags and combination sets that I could recall seeing in his store window a few weeks earlier. He pointed at them and said, "Take your pick." I remember stammering a bit and saying something like, "What do you mean?" He said, "I want my new neighbors to have a housewarming gift!" and laughed. He picked out a really nice high end yellow Davol kit and handed it to me while reaching for a sack to put it in. Yes, we still have it today some 40+ years later although the hanging loop has torn out and the hose has been replaced. I can remember the price tag on the box yet with a price of $11.99 in the early 1970s and if I recall it was about the most expensive on the table. It was a nice "housewarming" gift.

Those enema displays of my childhood always stirred something deep within me. I didn't really know why I got excited but I knew there was something there that I liked. As I got older I always strolled casually through stores that carried enema equipment and checked out everything. This was years before we had Walmarts, or even K-marts in our area. We had Gibson's Discount Store, which was a large retailer similar to walmart, and we had Zaire's and Grant City which were also like walmart. And drugstores held such treasures and I always tried to get a glance at the enema equipment without being caught!!!

When I was at puberty age or so, I always strolled through the enema section of the pharmacy. But I also worried about someone noticing my special interest as I strolled down the isle. It was a mix of emotions going down that isle ... being scared, embarrassed and aroused. Btw, I think all those combined emotions make for one hell of a sexually explosive experience. Oh yes, while reading the replies I couldn't help but remember the Brooks drug store that used to be in town back in the 70's. while their enema equipment display wasn't in the window , they did have a great selection of equipment. I even worked up the courage to buy a nice douche bulb. I often wonder what the young lady that cashed me out thought when I bought it.

I think that an interesting thing about those drugstore window displays was that they were there because everyone...druggists and customers assumed that "no home would be without one." Now the assumption is that we will "run out and get (a plastic) one" In this regard a lady friend who works in a drugstore has told me about a couple of times when a young woman customer "raced" into the store to buy a douche ! Plus cab change.

Oh I remember them well. As i walked to or from school I always slowed my pace or stopped completely at that window. I would look at the display of enema equipment on display and imagine having it used on me. This always caused me to get an erection. I would then hurry home and get to the bathroom fast for some relief.

Now days you would be LUCKY to find a combination water bottle even in a walmart store. Thank goodness for discreet online sites!

I do not remember the enema bags in the drug stores as much as I remember looking at the bags in the Sears catalogs. I seem to recall that there was at least one to two pages that had nothing but different bags listed. Back then i did not know what douching was or even know how to pronounce the word "douche".

Fast forward a few years and here we are enjoying the heck out of those bags!

I remember going into the local Walgreens with Mom downtown one afternoon when I was about 10 years old. Mom went to the drug counter and I wandered around the store. I settled in in front of the feminine hygiene area. Mom picked up medicine and came looking for me. She found me holding an enema syringe box looking at the back of the box where the picture of the bag was located. She put her hand onto my shoulder and I just about dropped the box. I remember Mom whispering in my ear that she'd take care of me when we got home. I thought she was going to beat my butt, but that I found out was not the case. She took care of me in the way I hoped. She gave me 3 large enemas before supper.

To emjaybe's comment -- It was the Sear's catalogue, a huge display of various enema equipment, nozzles...I remember the Cameo bag, red, 2 quart, good quality came with a long black douche nozzle and a smaller enema nozzle. That is the type of bag we had in the linen closet and other family members had hanging on their bathroom doors ...

Yes I too grew up in a small town, where they still had the Rexall drug stores. It was in the mid 60's for me an I was 10.

I went to the drug store also one day with my mom, as she was also getting some med's. I was wandering around the store to an found the spot where all the enema bags and bulbs were. An couldn't help but pick one of the boxes up that was a fountain syringe. You could open the box, an not knowing better an just wondering what was in it. I opened it an was looking at it when my mom also happened to come up behind me. She bent over an asked did I like what I was looking at. I thought my heart would stop.

Well she just took it from my hands an gave me a smile an said "I think we need to get this". She took it an me to the counter to buy that enema bag. As I was standing there I must have TURNED 3 shades of red. As the woman taking the money just looked at me an gave me a BIG smile. I had a feeling she knew what was going to happen.

Well as soon as we got home my mom took me an the fountain syringe to the bathroom. She said since you wanted to see an enema bag I must've wanted to know what a enema was. Well she filled it with soapy water an hung it on the towel bar, then she took off all my clothes an laid me on a towel on the floor. Then she went about giving me 3 big enemas. After she was done she asked did I want to know what enemas were any more.

In Italy you have to ask to the pharmacist ... These products are not visible ...

I get hard seeing enemas in drugstores.

It kind of makes you think that the stores that would have had the best displays must have had someone working there who was really into Enemas. Since CVS pharmacies are going to phase out selling cigarettes and smoking supplies for "health reasons"...maybe they will bring back some of the displays of Enema equipment for "health reasons."

In drug stores in the 50's and 60's they still had a wall of wooden drawers with brass slots for labels. You could find many different attachments for your bag, various connectors and all kinds of nozzles from "pediatric rectal" to the famous curved black bakelite douche nozzle which can be hard to find now. As a kid you had to be careful that the druggist or one of his store personnel did not grab you by the shoulder and drag you out of that aisle.

The assortment of bulb syringes and bags was usually close by to the nozzle assortment so if you were quick you could get a look at several items without attracting too much attention from the druggist.

I use to always get a hardon as a kid looking at the drugstore displays. They were hot. One even had a manikin holding a bag and the nozzle drooping from the hand. It was in the front window display of the old drug store. I think maybe someone might have done it as a joke. My bf and I use to walk by the store front and laugh.

The old Sears & Roebuck catalogue was fun too! I use to get such huge hardons looking at the enema gear.
