Doctor stays in the exam room while you get dressed
Has anybody ever had a doctor stay in the exam room while you got dressed after a physical or some other exam or procedure? I'm curious if anybody has ever been naked under a gown or in just underwear that was then lowered for a physical and then had to get dressed in front of their doctor and/ or nurse afterwards.
If the exam ends with you bent over the table, wearing nothing but a paper gown that is probably falling off your shoulders and covering nothing anyway, and your doctor doesn't say anything, do you sit back down on the exam table or do you walk over to your clothes and get dressed? What if you were only wearing your underwear for the physical, is that any different? Ladies, if your exam ends with you in the stirrups, do you sit up and discuss anything with your doctor afterwards or does your exam end right then? Do they ever come back in to discuss anything further after your dressed? I can't imagine any doctor ever telling a female to get dressed and then stay and continue to talk to them.
At my last physical, my doctor and I probably spent another 10 minutes talking after the exam was over. Do I sit back on the table in just the gown or get dressed with him in there? It's different if he actually tells me I can get dressed, but what if he doesn't say anything at all? Just curious about everybody's experiences, preferences, and suggestions.
When I visited my pediatrician for any reason at all, the nurse would always have me take off my shirt and shoes before the doctor ever entered the room. During the exam she would unfasten my pants at the beginning of the abdominal exam. Afterwards, while she was talking to my mom, at some point she would tell me I could get dressed, while they continued talking.
At my current PCP I once very clearly heard him give a sports physical to a young man in the room next to mine. After the hernia exam I heard them talking for a few minutes, then the door open, then heard them talking and walking down the hall to the receptionist desk. About a minute later, the doctor entered my room. So clearly he stayed in the room while the patient dressed. However, I don't have any idea whether he remained completely dressed during the exam and just dropped his pants at the end, or if he was undressed to underwear or a gown during the physical.
Obviously, if it's a doctor that keeps you dressed during the physical and clothes are just removed as the exam progresses, he or she will be in the room when you pull your pants up and/ or put your shirt on after the exam. I've had a few physicals like this and always feel slightly awkward. The more work I have to do to get dressed (buttoning and tucking in a dress shirt vs. pulling on a t-shirt), the more awkward I feel.
