For children in the 1990s, Were rectal temperatures considered abusive and very unusual?

Was born pre 1995. Never had a rectal temp that I can recall at least. Always under the tongue or armpit. I was surprised to learn that was a normal thing at one point in time when I got into medfet "content" during puberty.

@Curious85 This artifice - getting temp measurements rectally and taking advantage of lying still while the doctor gives shots in the bum cheeks - is something I do remember well. I regularly felt betrayed , but the pediatrician repeated it all the years.

@Thermogirl92 Oh! I did not expect this to happen into the 2000s… Did they at least use an electronic thermometer?
