Well, I have to put this in my mental journal under the section of, "Things I Never Expected to Happen"...
I have a friend who moved who, with her family left Maryland where we were living and attending school together during our 10th grade year. We were both 14/15. We stayed in touch by various means over the years, and about 2 months ago she moved to NJ, just about 15 minutes away and I had the chance to visit her and her teen daughter and son a few nights ago.
I have a small cut healing on my arm and naturally I don't want it scaring. It is dry and bothersome, and it started annoying me while I was there. I asked if she had some vaseline that I could put on it and I was directed to the medicine cabinet in the main bathroom. Low and behold, I took the top off the jar, and there were the tell tale signs! Several holes and streak marks in the Vaseline where a thermometer had been recently lubricated! It wasn't my orogonal intent to "snoop", but suddenly it became unavoidable. As I looked back in the medicine cabinet, I saw, plain as day two grey pencil type, thermometer cases with clear tops, and through the tops, I could clearly see a red triangular tip. Not being able to resist confirmation, I took each out, both clearly stating "RECTAL" on it and one still with a reading of 101.4. Age old questions answered!
I was taken back to the days of sitting in class having had my temperature taken rectally in the morning and wondering to myself which classmates that I was not aware of also had their temps still taken rectally. She of course was one of them. I certainly had my answer to that.
But, here's what hit me on the ride home. "Back in the day", did anyone else, female or male, whether having had their temp recently taken rectally or generally did, or just thinking about the matter for whatever reason, daydream as you looked around at your classmates and wonder which, boys and girls, may also have their temperature's taken rectally like you? If there is a second part to this question, it would be, "was there one or more classmates that you fantasized about seeing them have it taken, or wanted to take it, or have them take yours".
OK, I admit it, pretty weird question, but the experience did take me back. No, I did not mention anything to her but you can "bet your bippie" I will somehow wrangle the subject into a conversation in the VERY near future and see where it goes. (No sign of an enema bag or suppositories, and NO, I didn't search for either!)
Play safe!
