I am sorry LisaK, but some of the things you say I cannot possibly agree with either.
Violence teaches violence.
This is an old saying and one I found very shallow even as a child. The logical conclusion is that we do not need an Army, Navy, Air force, etc. since using force against anyone will only teach them to use force against us in return. I respect the Biblical "turn the other cheek", but as someone who was terribly bullied as a child and has who been attacked more times than I care to think of as an adult, the ONLY thing that has ever stopped them was when I fought better than they did. So in my experience, violence STOPPED violence.
Hitting, or "punishment" in general only re-enforces negative behavior
No. I have seen many children misbehaving at school when I was a child, and the teacher could only got them to behave, by using punishments. They wanted to play, not work, so would not listen to reason or positive reinforcement. Adults are just the same. I would like lots of money, but I would not rob a bank, because I do not want the punishment of ten years in jail. Same for parking where you should not and so on.
There is not a shred of compelling evidence anywhere of positive behavior being re-enforced by punishment.
Of course there is - Why are you not a criminal for example?
See just for example:

Given that total submission is NOT always positive and in an increasing number of cases respectfully assertive is the key to success
Agreed.
