In the, "for what it's worth" department, my persception of the "One Use Only!" edict for hydrotherapy specula is mandatory only when a speculum is used commercially. That is, every client gets a new speculum for each visit. At home, I have used a speculum several times on myself much like I reuse my enema bag. The difference between the two situations is hygiene. For myself, I can not contract a new disease that I already have, i.e. my own used spec can not spread disease if I am the only one using it. Other family members get a new spec for every colonic like "His and Hers" enema bags.

Over the years, I have had specula and hoses part company under pressure. Hose clamps can abrade the skin. My solution is to use rubber bands wrapped several times around the ends of enema hoses and be sure that the nozzle is inserted into the hose to the limit of the barb.

2 or 3 of the right size o-rings from the local hardware work better than rubber bands and look much better, too.

I think proper sanitation will solve what ever problems the manufacture is alluding to. Actually I think the only thing these guys are trying to do is eliminate the cash in your wallet.

No, they're trying to reduce the risk of an error or impossibility of sterilizing (due to the material or form of the item) causing the spread of disease. It's a big issue, especially as in general dirty items cannot be sterilized. Not only does single use reduce risk in the medical field, it also saves staff time and storage time.
