Real human partners can be annoying, pig-headed, jealous, fastidious about certain inconsequential matters, be burdened with psychological issues from their past or religious upbringing. And that is not even taking into account the more unpleasant character traits such as greed, duplicitousness, cheating, lying, gluttony, sloth, a weakness for alcohol and so on and on.

I think you understand what I am driving at.

Humans can be fatiguing and exhausting. Sex robots should be devoid of conflicting tendencies and easy to get along with.

If such things ever truly become available, truly lifelike (sex) robots/replicants, then boy oh boy, will there ever be a real serious problem with creating and sustaining real family relationships. Who'd want to go to all the hassle and expense and heartbreak?

My wife is basically asexual in interest and now is totally unable and/or unwilling to participate in any sex-related activity which I partially understand and am sorry it is that way. I bought a cheap party doll once years ago and tried to use it once but it was not satisfying so I pitched it. I am still married; going outside the marriage has its real multi-leveled dangers. Prostitution is not only illegal almost everywhere but can't be all that exciting. I still believe that remaining sexually active is healthy so I fly solo. Would I consider another, better quality party doll? Maybe, but I am not rushing into it as long as I can satisfy my sex needs alone, despite not being satisfactory, either - better than nothing!

If you go back to the beginning of recorded history, humans have used slaves for sexual gratification. It’s no longer ethical to keep humans as slaves, we’re developing robotic alternatives. It’s only a matter of time before they advance to the point of performing that service too.

For sex robots I agree. I would love to see such technology available.

But knowing humankind, I bet that by that time, there would be heated and acrimonious discussions over what would turn out to be another dimension of the ridiculous culture wars. Societal collapse, the end of the nuclear family and family values. There are already so many groups that still cannot accept the legality of nude imagery in print or on video, the existence of LGBT people and seem to have fainting spells over which gender uses which toilet facility and who think we are at present awash in a sea of filth and promiscuity and licentiousness.

Just try and imagine the explosive conniptions similar moral values groups would have over lifelike sex robots in the future.

Well, in truth, sadly few do and even fewer achieve much by their revolts.

The Haitian slave revolt in the early 19th century is the only one that comes to mind and they succeeded mainly because of tropical diseases decimating any army the salve holders sent.

The Emancipation of American slaves was more of a top down success, due to the Federal government becoming involved militarily. The slaves did not revolt on their own. They were accepted in the Federal armies and revolted/fought bravely under government military rules, which is somewhat different from an open revolt of their own volition.

And the Jacqueries of 1358 were revolts by peasants/serfs, but let's say very similar. Ended all very badly ...

@agracier I would disagree. As much as technology works to enhance our lives it also is very frustrating when it does not work. Which all technologies do at sometimes or another. It is just a matter of time.

That is true too. Technology can be mystifying and hard to fix when broken. I've recently had to initiate a new laptop and have to do the same for a new desktop soon. I do not look forward to such tasks.

I for one would gladly wish that smartphones and handheld communication devices had never ever been invented. I hate the things, but you can't do without them anymore. Or at least not be able to function as everyone else does without them. Going off the grid is wildly overrated and not that easy.

But that said, you can be mad and physically smash and destroy broken technology. You cannot do the same with members of a broken human relationship. Society frowns on such behavior ...

@agracier no, in 80-150 years depending on the pace of tech advancement AI will be running the means of production, the financial sector entertainment and most service jobs. At some point an AI somewhere is going to achieve the singularity and become self-aware.

So what happens when AI run all the things humans need to survive, and a self aware AI asks ‘why? Why do I need the meat sacks?’
