Can women feel the cut in an Episiotomy?

For some reason I am fascinated with episiotomy. It ruins the birth for a lot of people but for me it ads to the excitement, even though I feel bad about it because that’s very…I don’t know, sadistic? I have done a lot of research on episiotomy and read academic papers on it, and I have roleplayed it (from a man’s point of view.) I know women who say they’d rather get cut than tear, and I have heard of women who can feel the cut! What do you all think?

I think my favorite version of this is a woman on her back in the lithotomy position with a shaved vulva and getting an episiotomy.

I don't know about anyone else's experience, but my episiotomy wasn't done until it was clear that I would most likely tear if I didn't get one--which is determined by the baby's skull stretching the mother's body as Baby tries to enter the world. A nice clean cut can be stitched up fast and easy, unlike an uneven tear, and it heals very nicely, too.

My first baby, the cut was small. The second was a big baby, over ten pounds and it was longer. My sister also had a big baby and her cut was in the shape of a Y to make even more room.

I felt it, but it was not especially painful, more like a welcome release of pressure. As I recall it, the doctor said the birth canal loses a lot of sensation from the pressure of the baby's passage.

I tore on my first. It was bad. A LOT of stitches. The pain was pretty much blended in with the pain of the birth so it’s not like I can separate one from the other

Thanks for sharing your experiences, PinotNoir and Nurse Phillips!

PinotNoir and Nurse Phillips, may I DM you to discuss these more?

That was the only part my wife was dreading. We were in delivery and I was 'coaching' her with the HE-HE's. She hurt so much she told me to leave her alone. So I went down to help the doctor. He said our son wouldn't fit so he had to make a slight incision. She didn't feel it and after a couple stitches, she was as good as new.

Thank you @E42 for your positive feedback.

My wife said she really didn't feel it at all. But I damn sure did. It really hit me hard. I little bit later when the doctor was sewing her back up and she was holding our son to her breast she was moving a bit while the doctor was trying to sew her and I told her to hold still. I said that it was like the doctor was trying to sew a carpet flapping in the breeze. Poor doctor gave me the evil eye while laughing at the same time.
