I was always told 7 minutes rectally to make sure it registers, and whenever I take a rectal temp that's how long I wait no matter what.
@ccm93I enjoyed your post Re: your old school doctor when it comes to temperature taking.Has he ever taken yours using an electronic init w/ a probe such as FILAC or IVAC?
@OverRainbow I had to Google your question, lol. Yes, in the last year or so he started using electronic thermometers which take less than a minute as opposed to the five minutes plus with the regular thermometers.
@ccm93 ,Thanks for your response. These days it’s hard to find too many “old school” male or female doctors using the rectal temperature method, albeit the most accurate. So do you prefer it taken for 3-4 minutes with the glass mercury thermometer or the quicker electronic ones?Me…( pardon my crudeness) it’s glass in my ass if I can get it taken rectally. Hasn’t been in years in a medical setting.Did get a few rectal temperatures taken during Covid when went for colonics.A few masseuses who did home visits took my RT using the glass mercury thermometer but I had to explain the procedure first; except one therapist who was older and told me she was “ quite well acquainted with the glass mercury type.” And ‘twasn’t long before she proved that!Again thanks for replying.
7 to 10 minutes for me, sometimes longer if I'm at a Doctor's appointment and the nurse or PA gets busy or called away.

Happening as a kid at the doctors they’d leave the exam room door partially open and put the thermometer in you and then they’d get a call or something and leave. I remember one time I laid there must’ve been 20 minutes. My mom was there too, but she didn’t take it out. She just sat on the chair next to the exam table and waited for the nurse to come back.
