Has anyone had to undergo an embarrassing medical physical for work related purposes ? What happened ?

I had to have a medical when I was about 19 to join an insurance company. The doctor was elderly, ‘old school. probably ex military as he was very direct. He kept me waiting as he was running late and then when he called me in to his small, claustrophobic, examination room, no apologies and he told me to strip straightaway while he read my notes. I stripped to my briefs and he looked up and said ’those off as well'. He gave me the most thorough medical since some I had at senior school. When I have more time I could write about it.

I have had quite a few employer required exams and they have a number of features which make them exciting to me. First is that they are necessary for employment so they are outside of my personal choice and discretion. I must go through the exam to be employed in the particular job. Second, the doctor is not one of my choosing or one that is known to me, a stranger in other words. I do not know the doctor's routine for performing a physical and he has never seen me naked. Third, I never know in advance how thorough the exam will be. Fourth, I am not familiar with the office in which the exam will be conducted. Just having a familiarity with the office setting can give some comfort, and this is totally lacking with a company physical. All this is to say there is a lot of anxiety surrounding the build up of an upcoming employer required physical for me. Once I arrive I have no idea how long I will be kept waiting, what the exam room looks like, how the doctor looks and behaves, and how thorough the exam will be. Since none of these exams, at least in my experience, has been in the same office or with the same doctor, I cannot rely on my previous experiences to guide my anxiety. That being said, all these exams for me have been very brief, on the order of five to ten minutes,and cursory. They have all included an exam of the genitalia and hernia exam.

When I was in my early 30s, I had to have an employment physical. The employer sent me to an occupational medicine clinic for the exam. The nurse took me to an exam room and did my vital signs and as she left instructed me to undress down to "undershorts." I always wear tighty whities for exams and arrange my attire so that I end up with nothing else except briefs on--no socks, watch, anything else. I find this enhances the embarrassment. The last thing I worry about is getting an erection during the exam. My nerves take care of that. My penis is really shriveled up. IThe doctor came in and it was a 40ish lady. The exam was pretty typical except she transitioned from the abdominal exam (which I have almost invariably found to immediately precede the genitalia) to the genitals by saying "I need to check your testes," as she was taking down the front of the tighty whites to expose my shriveled equipment. She proceeded to feel the testes. Then she had me stand and leave my briefs down and she did the hernia exam with a very assertive order to "turn your head and cough." Then she put me back on the table on my side and did the rectal. I certainly felt put in my place. I still think about this incident and masturbate.

I had a non mandatory skin exam. It didn't occur to me when signing up that the doctor might be male, and to date he is the only man that's ever looked in my lips (I'm a lesbian)!

I had a pre-employment physical years ago. The nurse told me to strip naked and the doctor would be right in. About 20 minutes later in walks this unattractive middle aged female who checked EVERYTHING but the DRE. She said I could get dressed and leave. I guess she was the doctor.

Many of the jobs for which I have applied, required physicals before employment was offered. These have been great because they are done by contracted doctors to which I have been sent rather than a doctor of my choosing. Having a strange doctor do a physical is always more exciting because there is the element of the unknown. You do not know what the doctor looks like, what his bedside manner and demeanor are like, and what his routine is. Also, having another person see the genitalia who has never seen them before is anxiety producing.

A very long time ago, I had a job that required a physical for insurance purposes. You had to go to this particular doc they sent you to. I was pretty nervous, because it was an old fashioned office, and I was worried he would do the “rectal exam” as it was on a list.

But he didn't so… that was that.

If the purpose of an employment physical is to determine the capability of a candidate to perform the required duties of a job, how does a rectal exam help determine if a candidate is fit for a job?

It appears to me that the only reason for including a rectal exam in an employment physical is for the amusement and gratification of the employer and doctor.

An employment medical is normally carried out for insurance purposes, as life insurance is often included as part of the remuneration package. Some jobs, like a firefighter for instance, would probably include a fitness type medical to assess suitability for the role.

I've had several medicals for employment purposes but none of them particularly embarrassing. It was normally undress completely to shorts or briefs and a general medical would be carried out followed by an examination of the testicles. I never had a rectal examination during one of these pre-employment medicals. At my company we were also offered annual well-man or well-woman medicals, and when the men or women for that matter reached a certain age you would then get your first rectal exam. It was common knowledge in the office that these things happened and so you might well be teased about it and told to look out for the blue tube of KY jelly!

A rectal exam is nothing to do with suitability for the job, it might be carried out as part of a general health assessment for the insurance company, although in most cases probably not.

@sundaybrunch Do you remember if the medical was just a general one or if it had any intimate content like perhaps a breast check, or if you had to answer any intimate questions on a form or verbally?

There ARE some jobs that want you to bend over for them.

I had an employment physical back in the early 1990's. There was nothing embarrassing about it. Run of the mill I would say. Strip to my shorts, weighed measured vitals and a very thorough exam. The doctor was very agreeable with an upbeat attitude and a good sense of humor.

Most of my employment physical occurred in my 20’s. I worked for the company through my college years (summers) and then full time after graduation. The company would sent all potential employees to their contracted doctors for a exam. First, order of business was the hallway scale then would be directed the bathroom to give a urine sample. Usually, the nurse would ask if I could pee now or later. Then given a cup and instructed about wiping my penis and the “start and stop” start peeing in the toilet, then in the cup and finish up peeing in the toilet. The nurse proceed to take me to an exam room and did my vital signs and instructed me to strip/ undress down to just my underwear. I always found it interesting the words or phases the nurses used when asking me to undress- “underwear, underpants, briefs, boxers, shorts and skivvies.” Typically, I always wear “tighty whities” occasionally colored briefs for the exams. I found myself being nervous , anxious combined with embarrassment as I sat on the exam table waiting for the doctor. I hoped to remain “soft” but the “coldness” and nerves usually but not always cause my penis to shriveled up and scrotum & testicles to tighten. This was not always the case occasionally by the end of the exam at times would be semi or fully erect.

As for the exam, I found having a “unknown” doctor preforming the physical made it exciting. It was the same doctor’s office every year, with 6 or 7 physicians never having the same doctor examine twice. The surprise was you never knew which doctor (male / female) or their routines until the beginning of the examination. Typically , the exams were uneventful until the abdomen exam inching towards my genitals. The exciting moment sliding their hands just inside the waistband checking the femoral pulse . Followed by immediately pulling the front of my underwear down unveiling and feeling my genitals. Each doctor had their own routine and phrases when it came to standing up for the full genital and hernia portion of the physical. Usually it was something like “ok, hop down and drop or lose your underwear” and “ going to take another look and check for a hernia” and “have you ever had a hernia”. While I am standing in front of him or her usually they are seated on a rolling stool putting on the exam gloves. The whole time I am stand there’s that feeling my genitalia is being judged and evaluated. Since I am uncircumcised, I am asked if my foreskin is loose or tight and any issues before my foreskin is retracted. The exam proceeds where my foreskin is retracted then checks the shaft, glans, meatus. The testes are palpated and if I do a self examination of my testicles. Ending with being checked for a hernia then told to pull up my underwear and I can get dressed.

I would say three of these pre employment are memorable.

• The urine sample was left to end other reasons nothing to do with my usability to pee earlier. The nurse entered the room as I was get off the exam table and pulling down my underwear for the doctor. She witnessed my genitalia being examined and hernia. This exam room had its own bathroom where she gave instructions and watched me pee. It was rather awkward being at times “pee shy” then first time giving a urine sample along with having a female (nurse) watching.
• This exam was probably the most complete pre employment of all physicals. I am standing with my underwear pulled down he begins asking about my foreskin and then if I masturbate and if active sexually (condoms & multiple partners) before ever touching my genitals. He was older man not very gentle with huge fingers. The exam left me with a sore penis, testicles and groin (hernia). I also had to turn around and bend over while he opened by butt checks open. Luckily, only a visual check no DRE.
• This exam was exciting but also rather embarrassing the first female doctor and chaperone. My penis began tingling almost immediately when the female doctor and chaperone entered the exam room. I dreaded the time when she was going to tell to stand and pull my underwear down because I had become erect. The situation became a little more embarrassing because the chaperone (nurse) was my friend’s mother. It was rather awkward being naked, erect and having your genitals examined in front of her. Later on, my friend told me his mom had seen a few of our other buddies being naked and examined.

The only one I had was very simple with no undressing.

I was examined by a middle aged woman who just took my heart rate and blood pressure. Checked my finger nails to see if I bit them. And asked if I drank or smoked.

It was still quite exciting I guess. I was thinking that I had to pass the medical and I really needed that job, so if she had told me to take off all my clothes I would have had to do it. So my heart rate was definitely faster than normal and she did comment on it.

I haven't had any employment physicals worth speaking much about. But my friend Sam has, and told me. He was in the process of applying for jobs on the police force. The medical exam is part of the application process, so you undergo it prior to an offer of employment. He ended up applying (and undergoing exams) for about 5 different departments before getting a job. I imagine they are all very similar (and invasive), but he told me specifically about the final one.

He was 28yo, Hispanic, athletic soccer build. He called me after his exam to tell me how it went. I asked some probing questions to get some more details. He said it was thorough, EKG, spirometry, etc. Trying to disguise me fetish interest, I joked, “Yeah and some old guy said your balls were big enough to be a cop?” “Actually, it was a lady doctor. She was very nice and explained everything to me. But yeah, she was very thorough. She even stuck her finger up my butt to check my prostate.” He went on to tell me that it didn't hurt, but he thought it felt “weird.” He denied getting aroused. He said he had received one prostate exam before for another police job application, from and old guy. I would love to have seen him undergo these exams.
