For me it was around 30 years ago, a girl I had been to high school with and then went to the same sixth form college came into the common room when I had a free period. I knew her to say hello to, so did so and I remarked something like free period too? She said no she had a lesson but as she had a doctors appointment in an hour she didn't see much point in going for about 20 minutes.
I just said something like I had better keep away from you if you are contagious then! She just laughed and said something like no its a feet together knees apart visit. Me in my innocence said it sounded more like an aerobics class rather than a doctors visit and she then proceeded to tell me that it was check up for the pill and hurriedly added that no she didn't have a secret boyfriend nor did she sleep around.
Helen had a reputation for being quiet and very sensible and I think she just made that point for that reason. I said something like it was none of my business and I certainly would not go gossiping about her business.
We carried on chatting and she then proceeded to tell me that she suffered heavy periods and the doctor had put her on the pill to allievate her discomfort. Turns out she had been on the pill for the last three years.
She used to get a prescription for 6 months then when she needed a repeat prescription she went to the doctors for a check up and a new prescription. She then told me that the check up always involved stripping off, a breast exam, then she had to lay on an exam table bringing her knees up and putting her feet together which caused her knees to part. She then described the doctor having a good look, then, in her words using the clamp to do a smear test and then having a feel inside with his fingers. I was completely unaware this was what happened and somewhat surprised that a nice polite young lady like Helen was being examined like this.
Like I said she was very sensible, always handed assignments in on time and dressed very modestly, at school she always wore a long skirt below her knees and tie done up. Turns out the exam she was going for was the seventh one. I felt a little sorry for her and as I had passed my test, offered her a lift in my rather battered Metro car. Helen accepted and I dropped her off before returning to college.
