As a gay man, do you deliberately seek out gay doctors ?

As a coincidence my doctor is a gay man and it's great for me because he understands lgbt health issues and doesn't judge or shame me for my sexuality and he can tell me how to have sex in safer ways that are peculiar to bi trans men.

As an out, mature gay man, I don't intentionally out a gay doctor, however I only seek male doctors as I am just more comfortable discussing the more personal and intimate details of health with a man. Similarly, I am only comfortable with another man seeing me partially or completely undressed.

The only time I sought out a gay doctor was for urology. Having difficulty bottoming for so long made me wonder if something was wrong. I felt more comfortable talking to a gay man about gay sex. He also helped with my phimosis, which is slight. He helped me manipulate my foreskin and showed me different areas to stretch.

When looking for a chiropractor several years ago I was specifically looking for a gay man mostly as part of an unrealistic fantasy of him offering "special treatments". not surprisingly, that was not the case but he is a good chiropractor.

When choosing my new doctor after my last move, I settled on a doctor who seems straight (he and his wife have a new baby, though I guess he could be bi) but who specifically called out LGBT health as one of his areas of specialty. I've now seen him twice, and he has been very understanding and supportive, even in areas of sexual health. But he's also in his 30s. That generation doesn't find a cis gay man to be any more interesting than someone who is left-handed or double-jointed. Their education is completely different than the old docs I went to before who were in med school three or four decades earlier. So maybe it just doesn't matter anymore.

I am just curious how one learns about their, potential, doctor sexual preferences? It is not listed on their profiles, at least not on my insurer provided list of medical professionals. There are pictures, all sorts of credentials, even ratings, but no info about sexuality at all.

For cosmetic purposes electively, gay men seek gay surgeons. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter much.

I generally think gay men seek out gay physicians only for subspecalities. Like urology, plastic surgery, endocrine, etc.

Well, no... If it's a good specialist, I don't care if he is gay, or a man at the first place. And if doctor suddely appears to be a gay, it's just a pleasant bonus

I have been using the same female doctor for years. But I never disclosed I love sex with men. I get tested regularly at Planned Parenthood, so I know I am safe. She is retireing so I plan to seek a LGBT friendly MD to replace her.

i'm a critical care nurse and i have an infectious disease (ID) doctor i go to quarterly to get the whole battery of tests, and also to keep up with vaccines. At first there was a little bit of awkwardness because i work with these people in the hospital, and then am their patient in private.

my first ID doctors was a male, straight. But i found out when he retired that i could do my own swabs, butt he always did them when i went each quarter. He was a really great guy, excellent doctor, but that left me wondering.

His replacement is a woman, who's also excellent. As a matter of fact, even better. i don't have a primary care doctor, so she's really good about looking at me holistically. If i ask for a different test or referral, she is great about adding those things on for me. She's a caring, attentive doctor.

Even when i have various feelings of awkwardness or ____________, i pretty much own them along with who and how i am.

Personally, I prefer a professional doctor, and it doesn't matter if he's gay or not. I always prefer an older doctor who is very thorough in his work.

If I could readily identify one close by, I would definitely take him on if he has good credentials. I think I would be more at ease talking about men's gay sexual issues and more openly ask for PReP/Doxy.

"Good doctor" is way way way more important than "gay doctor" to me, but I do seek out good gay doctors so I don't have to, for example, explain what PReP is again. The more frustrating thing to me is that I know there are local kinksters who train doctors to be kink-friendly, but I have no idea how to find those doctors. Honestly with how things are these days I understand that they wouldn't want to put themselves out there to be found.

Living in a large city, I have the luxury of professional, inclusive medical care where I don’t feel the need to specifically hunt for a gay doctor. But if I lived in a rural area, I’d make finding one a top priority. It’s not just about comfort; it’s about survival and basic respect. In more isolated or conservative areas, the ignorance gap isn't just an inconvenience—it can be dangerous. I’d want to avoid the exhausting burden of having to 'educate' a provider who might be holding onto outdated biases or blatant homophobia. I’d rather travel miles to see a gay doctor than risk my health with someone who views my life through a lens of judgment or clinical incompetence and outright hostility.
