"Ok Anna. I'll do your tetanus injection first. This will go in your thigh because it has to go deep into your muscle."

Anna watched with nervous apprehension as the Dr held up a syringe and filled it with a cloudy white coloured liquid before tapping the barrel to remove the air bubbles.

Anna's stomach did a nervous flip as the smell of surgical spirit filled the air and cold wet cotton wool was swiped over her shapely muscular thigh.

"Ok deep breath for me...."

The doctor gripped her leg, firmly stretching the skin as he got ready to inject the vaccine using the z track method, a technique that ensured that all of the vaccine stayed in the muscle and non bled into any surrounding tissue.

There was an audible 'pop' as the needle broke through Anna's skin and Doctor Jeffries pushed down on the syringe until the barrel made full contact with her thigh and the entire one and a half inches of metal had bore deep into her muscle.

Before Anna had time to react to the pain of the needle, Dr Jeffries swiftly depressed the plunger, bringing immediate tears to her eyes again as the burning liquid immediately rushed out of the hypodermic and tore through her flesh, displacing the tough muscle fibres to form a tender swollen lump and a deep lasting ache.

Slowly he gripped her leg tightly and pulled the needle out, firmly pressing down on the injection site and wiping away the small bead of blood before applying a plaster.
