The Experiment

Part 1

Tuesday - The world outside the window was a dark and silent one. The night sky was clear and full of stars. A cold wind blew through the trees, rustling their leaves in a restless dance. Fern sat on her bed with her back against the wall, staring out at the darkness with an expression of melancholy on her face. The room was small and sparsely furnished, with a single bed, a desk, and a chair. The walls were bare except for a few posters of bands that Fern had once liked. There was no television or any other form of entertainment in the room.

The only window in the room was a small, barred one that looked out onto a courtyard. The courtyard was empty and there were no other buildings in sight. Fern felt like she was being watched all the time, but she couldn't see anyone else in the room with her. Fern made her way into her bed and started to drop off to sleep.

Fern made her way into her bed and started to drop off to sleep. She could hear someone talking to her, but she couldn't make out what they were saying. She was taken to a large room with white walls and a high ceiling. The room was empty except for a table in the center and a bright light shining on her. She could not make out anything else in the room. "Fern, can you hear me?" "Yes." She said. "What is your name?" "Fern." She replied. "How did you know my name?" she asked. "We have been watching you for a while now and we know quite a bit about you." They replied. "Who are you?" Fern asked. "We are the ones who brought you here." They replied. "Where am I?" Fern asked. "You are in our research facility." They replied. "Why am I here?" This elicited no reply. Fern began to panic. She didn't know what was going on and she didn't know how she got here. She started to cry. "Please tell me where I am." She pleaded. "You are in our research facility." They repeated. "But why am I here?"

Fern heard a mechanical noise like some machine whiring into life. A mask appt from out of the bright light and made it's way down towards her face. As it edged closer she could feel a draft from it a dry sensation. Fern heard a mechanical noise like some machine whiring into life. A mask appt from out of the bright light and made it's way down towards her face. As it edged closer she could feel a draft from it a dry sensation. The pole continued to push down and she felt the mask cover her nose and mouth. As she tried to breath she could feel resistance as the mask sealed tightly. She became aware of air being forced I to the mask and the smell changing. Her mind went blank as she felt herself losing consciousness. When she came to again she was lying on a table in the same room. She could still feel the mask over her face and she was still strapped down. She tried to move her head but there seemed to some sort of frame holding her head still and attaching her to the bed. She could feel the straps on her wrists and ankles. She tried to move her arms but she couldn't move them at all. She was able to wiggle her fingers and toes but that was it. Her body felt heavy as if she had been drugged or something. She tried to open her eyes but they were covered with a cloth. She could hear the breathing of someone close by. It was a man's voice and it sounded like he was talking on the phone. "We have her, we will be starting soon."

He said. "Ok, good luck." He replied. There was a pause then he spoke again. "I'll let you know how it goes." He said. Then she heard footsteps moving away. After a few minutes she heard the sound of a door opening and closing.

She was alone. She could hear the sound of her own breathing and heartbeat. She tried to move again but she couldn't move at all. Her body felt heavy and she couldn't even wiggle her fingers or toes anymore. She felt like she was being watched, like someone was watching her every move. She heard a door open and the sound multiple people entering the room. Then sound of lots of metal being arrange. She heard a voice. "She's ready." The man said. Suddenly she felt the bed move. The back lifted and the legs moved down until she was in a seated position. The bright light was still shining in her face and she could still not make out anything in the room. The mask over face still put a gas with a very chemical smell but she felt relaxed. She was aware of the noise behind her and the muffles voices. Then she felt a sharp pain in her arm. She screamed but the mask prevented her from making any noise. Gradually she began to feel numb, but still aware of things going on around her.

Suddenly there was a buzzing sound from behind her and she felt a vibration on her head. She should feel something dropping into her shoulders and onto floor but she could not turn to see what it was. Then came the scraping sensation.

Once it stopped she could feel the skin being rubbed and feeling of goosebumps appearing on her skin. The voices returned and she heard " now we have shaved her scalp we can get started". Next she felt her head getting wet on and something being brushed on. She felt a prickling sensation on her scalp and then a tingling. "Scalpel" said the faceless voice. She felt the pressure as the faceless surgeon cut Into her scalp. She felt the cold of the metal against her skin and the wet sound of her scalp being peeled off her skull. The surgeon asked for drill next and she heard them testing it. The sharp whine put her on edge, then she felt it against her skull, the fast vibration. The smell in the mask changed again and she started to feel even calmer. The surgeon carried on drilling into her skull, getting ready to remove part of it. She felt a tug and suction sound as part of her skull was removed. "First electrode please" she was aware of more activity behind her but still no one talked to her. "Electrode 1 in place" the surgeon said. She felt the sharp pain of the electrode being inserted into her brain. She could feel it against the side of her head and she felt a twitch in her right eye. "Second electrode please" she heard. "Electrode 2 in place" she felt the second one being inserted. She could feel it pressing against her skull and she was aware of a slight tingling in her left eye. "Third electrode please" she heard. She felt the third one being inserted into her brain and then pressed against the side of her head. She felt a twitch in her left eye. "Fourth electrode please" she heard. She felt the fourth one being inserted into her brain and then pressed against the side of her head. She felt a twitch in her right eye. "Fifth electrode please" she heard.

"time to test them, bring in the scanner" she heard a loud rumbling sound and something being placed around her heard. Thurn the electrodes on at ten percent. She became aware of a warm sensation throughout her body and then a very loud banging sound from the apparatus around her head. "What the hell is that?" she heard. "We're getting a reading, I think it's working" she heard. She felt something in her head being turned off and then another banging sound from the apparatus around her head. "Well, it appears to be working" she heard someone say.

"turn it up to twenty percent

The warm feeling grew and she began to feel a tingle all over her body. "Let's stop there, put her back to sleep" she felt the air in the mask change again and the thick chemical smell returned, she started to feel groggy and her eyelids heavy. In no time at all she was asleep
