Pay Attention

Pay Attention

My assistant set my schedule for the day on my desk.

I traced along the “New” column and I noticed just one.

Hmm.. He’d better not be difficult. I’d rather not deal with someone who doesn’t know how to behave at the dentist.

Make no mistake – I’m very good at my job. I do it well and efficiently. I don’t believe in getting into a practice with a group of other doctors. I believe in me and that’s all that’s needed.

I jumped in my chair as I noticed snapping fingers in front of me.

“Come on, girl, get moving! You’ve got a full house today.”

My assistant Charlie was always by my side. She was the best find I ever made.

I made my way through patients – root canals, cleanings, fillings... and soon, I knocked on the door to greet my new biggest fan.

There he was, perched in my black chair. I was such a classy person. Black and silver, it was comforting in a way. But for my new patients, things were anything but comfortable. I had to judge them and see if they were fit to be under my hands.

He was occupied in his phone.

Not a good start, mister.

I tapped my foot against the hard floor. My shoes clicked loudly, but he couldn’t even bother to give me the time of day.

This is not going to go well. But I believe I’m going to have a little fun with this one.

I softly walked to his side and put my hand on his shoulder. As he turned his head to look at me, his eyes stayed on his phone.

I grabbed the back of his head. My fingers laced themselves in his hair and I pulled back.

His head slammed against the headrest and Charlie was there to come to the rescue.

She protected his head from slamming against the chair again by strapping it down.

I lightly traced his arm with my fingers and I reached his hand, frantically trying to shove his phone in his pocket. I grabbed his phone and set it on the counter; he wouldn’t be needing it for a while. And honestly, I didn’t think he’d want it afterwards anyways.

Charlie was quick and in the time I had taken his phone, his arms and legs had already been restrained tightly to the chair.

I turned on my heel and ran my bare finger along his jawline.

It was so chiseled and demanding of exploration.

And that’s what I was going to do.

His lips were tight, his eyes were wide and my imagination was wild.

It was time to see what I could do.

“Now sir, you know what time it is,” I said as I repositioned the overhead light to mark his mouth.

He grunted an “uh-uh” from behind his clenched teeth.

I pressed a finger into the hinge of his jaw. The muscle protruded and acted like an impenetrable force.

That’s when I noticed he was breathing quite heavily through his nose.

I raised a sculpted eyebrow at Charlie and she ran a finger down the bridge of his nose and so gently pinched it shut.

I could see the veins in his neck and forehead protruding. He tried to force air through his nose to no avail.

And that’s when my opportunity came. A small opening in his teeth was all I needed to slip a finger through the tiny gap and ratchet his mouth open wide.

Charlie dutifully handed me a Whitehead gag and soon, I had all the access I could possibly need.

“That’s a good boy… Let’s take a look at what I’m working with.”

His teeth were relatively straight. Mommy and daddy must have spent quite a bit of money on braces. Such a shame that he didn’t wear his retainers. I could probably fix that if I wanted to.

I sat down on his left side and ran my fingers along his teeth. Nothing too special stood out, but maybe I could fix that.

I grabbed an explorer and mirror. Time to go exploring!

On the surface, things didn’t look to terrible. Some normal plaque buildup. But that normal buildup was going to have an abnormal removal.

“Char, I really don’t have time to clean this mouth by hand. May I have the electric scaler? I feel this will be more effective, but also, I believe this little boy needs to learn how to act when he’s in my office, wouldn’t you say?”

The cute little brunette nodded and passed it my direction.

“Come on sweetie, open wide… oh wait. Never mind,” I said with a twisted grin.

I traced his entire mouth. Blood flying all over, his hips bucking in pain, tears in his eyes.

“You wouldn’t be bleeding if you flossed more, you know.”

I ran my fingers over his now ravaged and sore gum line. Blood stained my once pristine gloves.

“You’re almost done, sweetheart. I just need to fill a cavity that I discovered while cleaning up your filthy mouth.”

I pet his head like he was nothing more than a puppy to me.

I ran my finger along the inside of the right cheek.

Charlie had prepared the syringe of lidocaine and passed it to me.

I pulled his cheek away from his teeth and I injected it at the base of 3.4.

The tears welled in his eyes as I slowly pushed the needle in and injected the vile-tasting liquid into his mouth.

Settling in, I did my job. I drilled into his tooth - maybe deeper than necessary, maybe a little wider than necessary, but I was just being efficient, right?

I cleaned the area and patched it with a composite.

I ruffled up his hair and the young man in my chair looked a little too relieved.

I decided the time to restart his orthodontic treatment was now.

I nodded to Charlie and she deftly mixed the molding putty and placed it into molds.

I pressed on his lower jaw, forcing his eyes to look into mine, “I’m going to remove this gag now. You so much as THINK about closing your mouth, you’ll be missing a couple of teeth before you could even think about opening it back up.”

He closed his eyes in understanding… and so that was my cue.

I pressed the mold for his top teeth firmly into place. He gagged and I reveled in his discomfort.

After a torturous 45 seconds, I popped it out.

He looked relieved and started to relax his mouth.

“Did I say you were done?”

His eyes flew open wide and his jaw hung in shock.

I grabbed the second mold and lowered it onto his bottom teeth. I may have let my fingers drift a little farther back on his tongue than necessary, but if he couldn’t pay attention to me, why should I care about those minute details?

He stared at me with his big brown eyes, pleading for release from this bondage.

Charlie took the molds and left the room, leaving just me and my poor little patient.

He had blood stains on his lips.

I deftly bent down, kissed his quivering mouth and told him to follow up in two weeks.

We’d have more fun then.

I walked out of the room, leaving him for Charlie and anything she may have in mind for our new patient.
