Rachel turns 21

The Day

To say I was nervous would have to be an understatement. Here in Kamara everyone has to submit to medical testing shortly after their 21st birthday. My parents are immigrants so they didn't know what exactly would happen on that day. I celebrated my 21st big time but couldn't quite shake the fear of the Tuesday after out of my head.

I got the letter in the mail a few weeks ago. It didn't state much, just the legalities. Refusal can be punished with jail time.

To not eat 12 hours before the appointment and expect to be there the entire day although that usually isn't the case.

And what testing one will be subjected to is entirely up to fate. I hoped they wouldn't draw blood. I am scared of needles. I really really hoped that. Otherwise I was thinking of having my heart beat listened to or an ekg. That didn't sound bad actually. Least it doesn't hurt. They wouldn't do anything...down there? Would they???

My friend from work who is 22 now, said not to worry about it. She had hers over a year ago and they didn't do much. Did an eyesight test and tried many different glasses on her. The eye drops apperantely were a bit uncomfortable but nothing major. Her friend seemed to have been doing a bunch of heart rate measuring and such, so also no big deal. Having talked to them provided me some reassurance until I made the mistake of also asking the neighbours daughter who is a couple years older than me....
