Chiara in Peru - one mandatory exam is missing

Arrival in Peru and presentation at the health centre

The South American sultriness was oppressive. Chiara had been in the country for just under two days and had not yet really got used to the hot and tropical climate. As part of an exchange project at her vocational school, the 21-year-old had travelled to Lima to gain experience abroad for three months at the local college. She had been given this opportunity as part of her vocational training, so the young woman was looking forward to a carefree time away from home and to meeting lots of new people. Before setting off on the trip, she had to have a few vaccinations updated by her family doctor in Germany and obtain a general medical certificate confirming that she was completely healthy and fit for the trip. As requested by her vocational school, Chiara had taken all her documents from previous medical examinations and certificates with her to Peru so that she could show them at the start of the exchange at the college there. It was therefore nothing unusual for her documents to be checked again before the start of her stay abroad - "I'm healthy and have everything with me, nothing stands in my way," Chiara thought reassuredly after her arrival in Peru. There was only one thing that seemed to worry the pretty 21-year-old: Her English wasn't the best and she always struggled to understand others and be able to express herself reasonably clearly.

So there wasn't much time after her arrival before she had to start her lessons at the college. Chiara was looking forward to the time ahead, which also had to do with the fact that she was not alone in this foreign country. She was able to go abroad with her best friend Marc, who spoke English much better than the 21-year-old.

While Chiara and Moritz explored the city in the two days following their arrival, they stopped off at a restaurant. While Marc was ordering, an incoming email made itself known on Chiara's mobile phone. "Look, I've just had an email. Classes start the day after tomorrow and I'm supposed to come to the health centre tomorrow with all my medical records. It seems to be a routine thing that they have to check the certificates and attestations before the first day at college. It also says that I can't go to school until the documents have been checked. Well, bureaucracy, I have to be there first thing in the morning," Chiara said unenthusiastically to Moritz, who took note of this information semi-attentively. Chiara put her mobile phone aside thoughtfully and looked at Moritz. "Can you please come with me tomorrow? You know my English isn't the best and I don't want to do anything wrong, especially with such bureaucratic stuff". Her best friend had no objections and so they arranged to meet the next morning in front of the health centre, which is only a few hundred metres from the college.

Chiara set off on foot to the health centre the next day, less than thrilled. She had all her documents in her bag - including the certificates from her gynaecologist confirming her regular routine examinations at the gynaecologist. Chiara didn't know whether this was relevant at all, but she wanted to be on the safe side and had taken it with her as a precaution. Now she was standing in front of the old, relatively run-down building, which didn't look very inviting. The signs next to the entrance suggested that the building housed several doctors' surgeries and offices. At that moment, Moritz also appeared in front of the health centre. "Let's go straight in, there's the registration sign. It seems to be on the first floor," Moritz said to Chiara. The two friends went through a bare stairwell to the first floor and walked along a long corridor until they saw a door labelled "Registration". Some of the plaster on the walls had crumbled away and it smelled of stale air. The two opened the door to the registration room, where a relatively young man was waiting for them.

"Will you help me? You know my English isn't that good yet. I'll just show him the emails quickly and you tell him that I have all my documents with me," Chiara whispered in Moritz's ear. Chiara hesitantly pulled out her mobile phone and showed the young man the English email that she had ordered to the health centre today with her medical documents. The young Peruvian nodded and gave Chiara a registration form in which she had to enter her personal details. Moritz then took over in English with Chiara's documents in his hand: "Here are Chiara's required medical documents, everything should fit". While Chiara filled in her registration form and pushed it back over the counter, Moritz and the young Peruvian briefly exchanged information in English, with Chiara only listening with half an ear. Moritz turned to Chiara shortly afterwards and nodded: "Well, I've given him all the documents and he's now checking everything quickly according to some guidelines for the college. He wants us to sit on the chairs outside for a few minutes. He'll get back to us. I think he'll just have a quick look through it and give his OK, it'll be a routine thing. Relatively relaxed, the two strolled into the waiting area and sat down. After ten minutes of waiting, Chiara huffed in annoyance: "How much longer is this going to take? I hate the bureaucracy, it's almost as bad as in Germany. It's clear that everything fits or do they still want to examine me here in this shabby shed? They can forget it". When Moritz heard this, he smiled to himself. He would love to be there when his best friend, who is very pretty, was examined on her beautiful body. He had already seen her naked in a few situations - he would love to be there for a more intimate examination of Chiara. At that moment, the young Peruvian came from the registration desk and asked them to come in again. He gave Chiara her documents back, but had also prepared a yellow slip of paper.

Chiara waited anxiously for an answer from the Peruvian. "So Chiara, I've looked through all your medical documents. Everything looks good so far, you seem to be a healthy girl. You know that in order to be accepted here at the college, you have to provide proof of certain examinations that are based on Peruvian guidelines for young women your age. Unfortunately, I have to tell you that a special examination is missing from your last gynaecologist's report, but it is mandatory here. This is probably not standard in Germany and is not always done, but I can't change that, rules are rules. Unfortunately, I can't give you the necessary authorisation for college without it. But you're in luck, we can make up the examination right here and now. I've just been on the phone, we have a team of gynaecologists right in the building. I've just booked you in there, they have time for you right now," was the Peruvian's detailed message. Chiara only understood the English in fragments, which is why Moritz translated what was said into German. When Chiara heard this, her head ran red and before Moritz had finished speaking, she shouted angrily: "There's no way I'm letting a gynaecologist examine me here! What kind of bloody special examination is this that hasn't been done on me yet? I'm perfectly healthy, it's all in there".

The Peruvian just mumbled something in incomprehensible English and handed Chiara the yellow slip of paper, on which only the field "Additional examination: gynaecology" was marked in bold. Moritz translated again: "Hey, come on, it'll be half as bad. He's already told us over the phone exactly what kind of examination needs to be done, it's probably not even written on the note. It's probably just a minor thing and nothing major. Please don't get in the way now, I'm there too, I'm sure it'll be done very quickly. Chiara angrily walked towards the door, while she gave the Peruvian at the registration desk another dirty look and defiantly handed Moritz all the documents, including the yellow "referral slip" to the gynaecology department. "Just take the yellow slip of paper with you and hand it in to the gynaecologist, the team will know what to do. Just go up the stairs to the second floor and take the first door on the right," said the Peruvian sympathetically. Moritz quickly ran after Chiara, "Wait a minute," he shouted. "This is upsetting me, now I'm supposed to have my lower body examined here in a foreign country, I can't understand them in English anyway, what's the point," said Chiara with tears in her eyes. Moritz then took his best friend in his arms: "Hey, everything will be fine. I've seen you naked so many times and you really don't have to be ashamed of me. But if you want, I'll wait outside, otherwise I'm happy to go in and translate - just as you like.

She looked at him, sobbing: "Please go in with me. I'm a bit scared...but I can't seem to get round it, apparently I have to, otherwise I won't get into college. I trust you, please don't leave me alone, whatever they want to do". Once that was sorted out, the two of them made their way to the second floor. Moritz accidentally dropped the yellow note on the stairs. When he picked it up again, he happened to glance at the back. There was a note on it that neither Chiara nor he had noticed before. What he read there made his breath catch and his eyes widen. It was written in relatively small letters "full rectal exam required - missing in gyn-exams in Germany". Shocked, he kept this information to himself and headed for the door labelled "Gynecology" with his best friend.

One mandatory exam is missing

Chiara looked at the door of the gynaecology department, uncertain and with shaky hands. A thousand questions flashed through her mind, the situation was completely overwhelming her. She had thought that she would just be able to quickly complete a bureaucratic formality here and then hit the ground running at college - instead, the brunette 21-year-old was about to have to introduce herself to a gynaecologist in a foreign country who probably didn't even speak German and would do who knows what to her. "What the hell is there to miss for an examination that isn't standard in Germany?" Chiara asked herself, feeling close to despair. Right now, it was more the uncertainty of the upcoming examination and the unfamiliar surroundings that were almost choking her. The air was dry, it was as quiet as a mouse in the corridor and all you could hear was the quiet whirring of the air conditioning. In her airy summer dress and white trainers, the pretty girl now stood there looking rather frightened.

Due to the enormous heat, she was of course only thinly dressed and only had a pair of panties and a bra underneath her summer dress. She gently felt Moritz's hand on her shoulders: "Come on, let's go in together, the quicker we'll be out again". Chiara boldly reached for the door handle, opened the door and looked into a relatively dark anteroom, which was also a kind of waiting room with only one small window. Behind a desk sat a young woman, perhaps in her early 30s, who approached the two new arrivals with a friendly smile and looked at Chiara as if she was already expecting her.
