The Caretaker- Over My Head

Chapter One

It was late Friday afternoon and I had just finished getting the horses in from the pasture to their stalls for the night. Stalls cleaned, and horses fed and watered I was done for the day. I grabbed a beer out of the fridge and went back downstairs to relax for a bit. A couple of days previous I had a phone message from Jenn, Mrs. G's adult daughter asking that I have the brick house open for her arrival Friday afternoon. I had taken care of that earlier in the day. Halfway through the beer Jenn arrived. She gave me a wave as she brought her belongings into the house. A few minutes later she joined me outside.

"Hey there, mind if I join you? .

"Hi, Jenn, of course not. Have a seat. Would you like a beer?

"That would be great if you have one."

"No problem, be right back." I went upstairs for the beer returning to sit with Jenn.

"Thank you so much." as she took a long pull off the bottle. "That is so good, thanks again."

"You're welcome Jenn, all well in your world?"

"Yes all is well, so happy to be here for the weekend. It's supposed to be a gorgeous weekend."

"It sure looks like it. Is there anything I can do for you while you are here?"

"No, thanks though. I am looking to do very little this weekend after a long week, Let me ask, are you feeling ok?"

"Yeah, I feel great. No problem"

"Are you sure? Jenn replied.

"Yeah I'm sure, I feel fine."

"Are you absolutely positive you feel all right? Jenn gave me a mischievous smile.

"Absolutely positively Jenn." I answered as I began to wonder where this was going.

"Well ok then. Jenn gave me another smile. "I see this is way over your head."

"Over my head? I don't understand."

"No you certainly don't. It's ok, perhaps it will come to you. I sent you a letter a few weeks ago and I assumed you received it. And I did not receive a response from you. And so I asked if you were feeling ok. And after you said you were fine I asked again and then asked again."

I sat a bit lost as to where this was going. "I know that Jenn. But I feel fine,"

"Oh this is so over your head. I don't mean to make fun of you, but I find this a bit humorous. Let's see if I can help you understand. So first I sent you a letter explaining a few things about me. I also mentioned a gift I was sending. With me so far?

"I think so."

"So I arrive and ask if you are feeling ok. You say you are fine so I ask again. So I ask again and again with the same response. You feel fine. So that being the case our conversation can move onto another topic. However, if you would have said you were not feeling all that well that would lead me into deciding if I could do something to help you out. Like, I don't know, perhaps I decide you need your temp taken or you need to be given an enema? Or maybe several enemas? But since you feel fine there is no need for any response or action from me. So be it. Thanks for the beer, I am going now to get settled in. Perhaps I will ask how you are feeling tomorrow? Do you get it now?

"Yes, I do, but"

"Enjoy the evening. I am going next door. I will see you tomorrow. Should I ask of your well being tomorrow? Jenn smiled.

"Ah, yes please." I responded.

"Very good. Have a good night." With that Jenn returned to the brick house for the evening.

I headed back upstairs thinking. How could I have missed where Jenn was going with her questions. Over my head? Over my head by a mile!

Now I knew the response she was looking for. And I was feeling quite sure that when asked tomorrow, I do hope she will ask again, that I will respond differently. No, Jenn I don't feel that well for some reason. And I was feeling quite sure how Jenn would respond. It looks like tomorrow will be a very interesting Saturday.
