Lucky Springs Village

Moving In

The move to Lucky Springs Village the new “smart community” was all my husband talked about. Everything was new and state of the art. They were completely self contained and almost a little oasis from the outside world, or so he said all the time.

His company played such a vital role in the development, they even offered moving stipends to all employees who agreed to relocate.

I personally liked our townhouse in the city. It was within walking distance to whatever we wanted and at 6 months pregnant, the doctor, schools and local parks were my top concern and I was pleased with them all.

However the move was all he talked about to the point I finally gave in. The packers and movers came out and in one day we were on the road out of the city.

“Are you sure you are ok with your new work commute?” I asked him.

“Are you kidding? To come home to a place like this everyday I’ll take anything!”

I stared out the window until the city skyline faded into the distance and we got to the more agrarian landscape. I do have to admit, it was beautiful and peaceful.

“I just feel like we can breathe better out here!” Lucas exclaimed as we began to approach the community gates.

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes wondering who my husband even IS anymore. The gate was adorned with gilded clovers, as to the name, Lucky Springs. I hate cheesy theming.

Driving through the town square and into the residential area, we pass a community pool and playground all new and pristine. We had selected the 4 bedroom cottage-style home. One of the more high end and expensive options. But Lucas had done very well at his job and assured me we deserve the best for us and our baby.

He pulls into the driveway and waits impatiently as I make my way to the front door with him. Almost dropping the keys with excitement he pushes the door open. The entry foyer is nothing short of charming and welcoming. The hardwood floors shine beautifully as the sun peeks through the plantation shutters.

“Ally check out the smart appliances! Touchless water faucets, the outdoor kitchen and hot tub out back! Babe, this is living!”

I force a smile and nod as he bounces around like a child on Christmas morning. There really isn’t anything to not like about the place but for some reason I feel uneasy about the whole thing.

“Darling what is this?” I ask picking up a postcard on the large kitchen island.

The front has a silhouette of a pregnant woman. When I flip it over it simply states: Mrs. Deere, you are scheduled for an appointment with Dr. Lloyd Braunschneider June 30, 2018 at 2:00 PM at the Lucky Springs Women’s Clinic.

“What the hell that’s tomorrow and I didn’t make an appointment!” I toss the postcard to Lucas.

“I’m sure we put your pregnancy on our new resident paperwork and they went ahead and scheduled you. There’s only one obstetrician so I’m sure they wanted to get you on the books.

“And it’s a man?” I press. My doctor back home was a wonderful liberal woman who was pro female rights. Dr Lloyd didn’t exactly sound like he was with the times.

“Come on,” Lucas places a strong hand on my lower back. Let’s go sit on the back patio and wait for the movers. I know you’re tired from the drive and you’ll want to be well rested for your checkup tomorrow.
