Suzy had become bored with her job as an aid at the nursing home. Of course, everyone there was elderly, and it made for a depressing work atmosphere. She put the needle against Suzy’s skin, and asked “Are you ready”? Suzy nodded her head and watched as Gail inserted the needle in one swift motion, instantly feeling the sting as the skin was pierced. She wanted to look away, but knew she had to watch the procedure so she could perform it on other people. She watched in awe as her blood filled the tube. Gail informed her one tube is always enough, and then disconnected the tube, withdrew the needle, and covered the wound with a piece of gauze, telling Suzy to bend her elbow for a few seconds as she retrieved a Band-Aid to cover the gauze.

Figuring her exam was over, Suzy breathed a sigh of relief as Gail began to recap the exam in lesson form. She went down the checklist to make sure Suzy understood the importance of covering every part of the applicant’s health to avoid loss to the company. As she got to the end of the list, she looked up at Suzy, smiled, and said “We forgot something”. Suzy dreaded to hear the answer to the question she had to ask: “What did we forget”? Gail answered matter-of-factly, “Your tetanus vaccination status needs updating”. Suzy thought to herself “I knew it! I knew I would have to get a shot”!
