Nurse "Blunt"

Nurse "Blunt"

As a gov't employee, annual medical exams in my field were required. Had a number, but one stands out. I forget her name but she was a NP and very "blunt" in her ministrations. After blood being drawn I waited outside the Dr's office. A nurse stepped out, called out my name and I went in.

She said the Dr. was not in, she was a NP and would be doing my exam. I then noticed the two young women, one Filippina, one African-American. New nursing students now assigned to this NP.

"Strip to your t-shirt and underpants, and mount the scale. I'll get your height and weight." She did. Then I sat on the table and she remarked, "Blood Pressure is OK, good! Had a DRE before?

"Yes I answered.

"Well, first lay flat on your "tummy", this won't take but a few moments, I'll be taking your temperature first." Sort of enjoyed hearing that!

Seconds later my briefs were pulled down and I watched her retrieve the thermometer, shake it down and lubricate it. I felt a bit of coolness as she spread my cheeks, then felt the thermometer enter my anal opening.

"Ladies, after I remove and read the thermometer, you will repeat the procedure. Have either of you done a rectal temperature?"

I saw the facial expressions which said no they'd not. She saw it too. They hadn't.

"I will guide you step by step, as this is an "invasive procedure" and done improperly, can injure a patient."

Everything from having each one tell me I was to get my temperature taken, having my briefs lowered and the thermometer shaken down, read, lubricated; and my buttocks parted, the thermometer being put into my anus then removed after 3 minutes they repeated the procedure and I enjoyed having them do it, believe me.

"Get use to this ladies, the rectal temperature is the most valued for its accuracy, and at times is used. I take rectal temperatures for that very reason. And yes, you'll find some patients who don't want it and will refuse. If so, get the physician and let he/she deal with the matter!"

After that, I got the DRE. but the two did not do that, but being I had to receive two injections in my buttocks, again the students were shown how to administer the medications via injections and did so, one student per cheek. They were quick, too.

With the nursing students still present, the NP finished the exam, pointing out a number of things to them relating to physical exams.

Nurse "blunt" was direct, forceful in a good way, and though I was surprised at the RT, as it had never been taken in the previous examinations I was not by any means, taken aback, otherwise I'd have surely balked. I got a very thorough examination that day.
