The pre employment poke and prod

The Offer

The phone message from the large law firm's managing partner's office was followed shortly by a email..Would he be available for approximately four hours the morning of Thursday next?

The 27 year old was shocked. Only two years out of law school, and what many would consider a "ham and egger", he certainly had not expected to get anything more than a form letter thanking him for his interest. Only two more, and the wall next to his back door wouldn't need expensive wallpaper.

At the appointed time, he was riding the elevator to the upper floors of the downtown office tower, where he would enjoy a breathtaking view of the river flowing by, just a few blocks away.

The meeting was very brief, indeed, and seemed almost unnecessary. A couple minutes of chit chat, couple of questions, then he was shaking hands and passed off to an attractive young woman, perhaps slightly older than himself, with an empty ring finger.

"Congratulations!" Smiling, she led the way down a hall, opening a door which revealed an internal stairway to the floor below, which the firm appeared to also occupy.

"Excuse me?", he asked, his height dwarfing her tiny but definitely feminine and athletic frame.

The plates by the doors had only names, some showing two. The status was in the location and size. This was larger, but not as nicely appointed as the other office. His escort introduced him formally, then, quietly closing the door, took her leave.

"'I'm Susan Anderson, the Human Resources Director."

"We would like to extend an offer,..." For a moment he zoned out, then picked up a sheet which she slid across the polished top of the round table in the corner.

Printed on it was a very generous offer, which he shared with her he would accept. "We'll get your credentials, then Emily can get you to our Medical Director's office, for your physical."

Tapping the keys on her computer, she continued, "We carry a considerable amount of insurance on our staff, so it's just a formality. We also provide annual assessments, at no cost."

"I, uh, don't want to inconvenience her," watching as she took the completed corporate identification card, along with a swipe card smiling, asking him to sign the receipt as she called for his escort.

"She need to make a stop there anyway, so it's not an issue." Replacing the phone, smiling,

In a matter of seconds, the same attractive young woman who had escorted him to Ms. Anderson's office appeared, smiling, "Ready to take a walk? It's just a few blocks"

"Thanks, Ms. Anderson," he turned, smiling nervously,"It IS a nice day, stepping toward her. Following here down the hall.

"Would you like to drop anything at my office?" Glancing at the navy, three piece suit, he appeared to be over dressed, especially for a visit for a physical.

He hadn't thought of that, and, smilingly, agreed. She turned into a medium sized work area, with a shelf with a rail underneath with hangers. Slipping his suit coate off, then hanging his vest, he draped his coat over, replacing it.. Smiling, "I can breathe again!" He looked much more at ease in the starched white shirt and tie. At over six feet, he dwarfed her, admiring her trim body, blonde hair and blue eyes. A sky blue blouse accented her small breasts, and her skirt made her look more like a school girl than a law firm employee. So, any questions, Mr. Moore, she asked, grinning.

Welllll, Emily? Smiling, as they walked across the lobby, turning toward the elevators, feeling at home with her,

Yep', Emily.. Name passed down, almost worn out.. grinning.

So,... Tell me about this doc,

Well, he's thorough. Probably early 40s, handles our reviews for cases, expert opinions. Very nice office..Staff is top notch. I get shots each month, and see them more than others, she grinned. What else? Passing by a pub up the street, They're great for afterwork, smiling.

Turning onto Main, they dodge a rail trolley, grinning at their near miss. It's only about three blocks down. He grins, Great! I don't think I can get lost! One turn!

She smiled. If you want, just tell them to call me when you're about ready, and I'll come I've only been with the firm right at two years, so I can still remember.

They turned in, a distresses brick wall on the left, and a spiral staircase going downstairs, to the right. Just to the left of the spiral staircase was a glass brick wall, forming the East side of the reception area. Several expensive looking sofas and chairs occupied the space.

On the western side, next to a door, was a desk with an attractive woman, near Emily's age BECCA! Grinning, she smiled when she replied by calling her name in a similar level of greeting. WHO do you have? Looking at the newly hired new patient, she introduced him as Mr. JoSEPH Moore the newest staff member at the firm. Ms. Anderson wase supposed to let y'all know. He's in for the Usual, smiling up at him.

Okay, yout two, please signi . I'll let Lieze know you're here, passing Joe a pen, smiling.

Taking it, he completed the questions, passing the pen to Emily. Becca then passed him a tablet and stylus for the documents. He went, took a seat and began.
