My stories

My first surgery

About a fortnight ago I underwent surgery. It was my first visit to the OR.

A few days before that I started feeling dull pain in the bottom. A couple of days later when the pain didn't settle I was advised scanning. CT Scan revealed that there was an internal growth near anal area. Dr said that this needs removal urgently. So 2 days later the procedure was fixed. A day before surgery I had to take medicine to prepare my gut for the procedure. It was terrible.

It was to be a day procedure. I was instructed to bathe with medical soap before coming to hospital the next day.

On the day of procedure we reached and registered. A nurse gave me a long gown and asked me to change. "Gown opens at the back. Remove Everything. Your T-shirt, lower, Bra and underwear, everything comes off"

The way she specifically mentioned every garment made it more embarrassing.

Then I was asked to wait till the OR was ready. Meanwhile another nurse checked my BP, pulse, listened to my chest and checked my throat. Once I was cleared for procedure she interested cannula. I have taken many injections but this was very painful. My pain tolerance is very low anyway.

After that I was asked to relax. About half an hour later one nurse came with a gurney to take me to the OR. I could walk very well but she wanted me on the gurney. Now I started to feel scared. Legs were strapped for protection after I lied down on the gurney.

Moving through the corridors we reached the OR. I was held and shifted to the OR Table. Honestly very embarrassing. In the OR it was just the surgeon who was a lady. All others were males. This got me more anxious.

First I was positioned on my back. One of the staff connected bp and pulse monitor then took a quick peak from the top of the gown to connect ECG pads. Extremely embarrassing for me.

Then the anesthetist connected IV and placed oxygen tube. The tube was slightly uncomfortable.

The Dr then asked me to turn to my left. I did. The anesthetist said he is putting me to sleep now.

The only thing I remember after that is a feeling of gel like thing coming out from my behind. That was the end of the procedure. It felt as if I pooped.

I was still in effect of sedation. I don't even know when I was wheeled to the recovery area. It must have been a strong dose of sedative as it took almost 1.5 hours before the effect was gone. I could feel someone stething me a few times. The nurse told us that my heart rate wasn't getting stable. But later on it was normal.

My parents were told earlier, but I was told only at the end of the procedure what had been done. An instrument was inserted through my bottom and the growth part was clipped out and removed through that instrument.

This actually worked. My pain reduced 2 days later. Everything ok now.
