I had my annual physical yesterday with the new Family Nurse Practitioner at the practice my wife and I have been using for the last ten years.———————-A couple of weeks ago I had my annual physical with the new Family Nurse Practitioner at the practice my wife and I use. It was the first time that I had her as my “doctor.” My first impression when she came into the room and started to ask me questions was that she was very attentive and pleasant. When we talked before the exam began, I could tell that she was really listening and took my concerns seriously. I explained that during the previous two years the physician assistant at the practice had examined my prostate and testicles in the lithotomy position. She nodded her head, asked a few questions about the exam, and then agreed to perform both the DRE and testicular exam with me in the stirrups.She asked me the standard physical exam questions. Then she took out a blue cloth gown, instructed me to undress and change into the gown, and left the room.She returned to the room and started with the standard eyes, ears, nose, throat, and then listened to my chest. She then had me lower my gown to my waist and proceeded to give me a skin exam. She then had me lay back on the table, and proceeded to give me a breast exam. It was an unusual sensation. As far as I can remember, she is the first provider that has done that for me. I would add that she was very thorough.She then extended the stirrups, though not as wide as the stirrups had been the previous two years. She had me place my heels in the stirrups and scoot down towards the end of the table. With the stirrups closer together than my previous two exams, it was a little awkward and a bit uncomfortable with my legs so close together. She then stood beside me rolled up my gown till it was above my bellybutton, and proceeded to give me a testicular exam. It was interesting to have her standing beside me as she examined my testicles. Her touch was much more gentle than the PA I had the previous two years.Once that was done, she took out a tube of lubricant and moved to the bottom of the table between my outstretched legs. For the previous two physical exams, the PA had sat on a stool at the foot of the table, this time the nurse practitioner chose to stand.I watched as she lubed up her middle finger. She told me to relax and bear down. And then she inserted her finger into me. I felt “lucky“ this year, because she had propped up the head of the table so I was sitting at an angle. I could sort of watch her perform the DRE, which was a first for me. She probably examined my prostate that way for about one minute. She withdrew her finger and had me take my feet out of the stirrups.She then pushed the table extension in and had me stand up and lean over the table. Just like the last two physicals, I was standing between the two extended stirrups, bent over the table, with my chest flat against it. I believe she applied some more lubricant and then she gave me my second DRE that way.She withdrew her finger, and said that she was finished. I stood up and turned to face her. We talked for a few more minutes then she left the room so I could get dressed. Before she left, she placed a box of tissues nearby and said I could use that to wipe off any excess lubricant.
