Thanks for the info Susie & JimmyT. I use the sodium bicarb to provide a high Ph solution. It seems to help with the inflammation caused by Crohn's disease. When I was diagnosed many years ago, I came home from the hospital with prescription for Valium, or something similar. I took it twice & threw the rest away. Back in those days, I had some pretty rough times, lots of flare ups.
My aunt mentioned my situation to her MD, because she knew he also had Crohn's disease. He told her to have me call and make an appointment to see him & bring my medical records & X-rays from my recent stay at, what at the time was, Meadowbrook hospital. He spent some time going over my records & films, did a thorough exam, the we talked. He peppered me with questions, then told me about his Crohn's disease.
He wrote a script for Sulfasalazine. Then he told me about something that he found helpful. Salt & baking soda enemas, taken to help with the inflammation caused by the disease. He told me no two cases of Crohn's disease were exactly alike. What helps one patient may do nothing for another. He asked if I'd ever had enemas before & I told him I had. I didn't tell him I was hooked on enemas since age 8 😃) He went into detail about how I should take the enemas to get the solution to fill the ascending colon. Two quart enema to clear the way, then 3 quarts knee chest, then Sims, but on the right side, not left. Hold for 5 or 10 minutes, if possible, repeat. At that point in my life, I could take 3 quarts, no problem.
I followed his instructions and they actually did help........not a cure all, but certainly better than nothing. Fast forward to now & I read in a medical journal how Intestinal Ph plays a huge role in intestinal inflammation associated with IBD & Crohn's and colitis. Dr. T was way ahead of his time.....and a pretty smart guy. I took a series of three this afternoon with a NOS late 50's early 60's German, open top 3L bag ( Pictured in Images > Enema > Equipments & Devices). Two qt to clear the way, the two 3L enemas knee-chest then rt side. Probably don't even need 3L since the ascending colon is gone, but old habits die hard. All quiet on the G.I. front.
Best,
vapor
